Open position on the MN Rural Health Advisory Committee

The Minnesota Department of Health's Rural Health Advisory Committee (RHAC) has several open positions and is seeking applicants. RHAC is a legislatively mandated, statewide forum for rural health interests, and features a diverse committee membership that:

  • Advises the commissioner of health and other state agencies on rural health issues;
  • Provides a systematic and cohesive approach toward rural health issues and planning; and
  • Encourages cooperation among rural communities and among providers.

Two of the vacant positions must be filled by:

  • An advanced practice professional; and
  • A representative of a community organization that works with individuals experiencing health disparities.

The Equitable Health Care Task Force

The Minnesota Legislature established an Equitable Health Care Task Force in 2023 The task force, which will be convened by MDH, will examine inequities in how people experience health care based on race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, and disability. It will identify strategies for ensuring that all Minnesotans can receive care and coverage that is respectful and ensures optimal health outcomes. Always held on the third Thursday of November, the Minnesota Office of Rural Health and Primary Care joins its many partners in celebrating National Rural Health Day (NRHD) (http://www.powerofrural.org/). Together, we want to acknowledge our rural health care professionals, hospitals, clinics and long-term care facilities that are dedicated to delivering high-quality, community-based care - especially to rural Minnesotans!

Listed on the same page are ideas for using social media to celebrate NRHD.

Promotional Toolkit

National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH) has created a set of free downloadable promotional tools for anyone to use. The toolkit includes NRHD logos, social media cover photos and messaging, activity sheets, and templates.

Grants and other funding

NEW: Minnesota Health Care Loan Forgiveness

The purpose of Minnesota’s Health Care Loan Forgiveness program is to recruit and retain health care professionals to needed areas and facilities in Minnesota. The Loan Forgiveness program funds various health care professionals serving in high-need areas. The application cycle for eligible professions will OPEN Wednesday, November 1. NEW: Rural Family Medicine Residency Grant

The Rural Family Medicine Residency Grant program assists Family Medicine Residency programs outside the 7–county metropolitan area by funding costs associated with training eligible residents. Step 1 applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. (CST), Wednesday, November 8. Step 2 applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. (CST), Monday, November 27. NEW: Rural Health Assessment Extension Grant

The Rural Health Assessment Extension Grant provides funding to previous recipients of the Rural Health Assessment Grants to continue work on the project that was originally funded. The goal of the funding is to support collaboration in rural Minnesota between hospitals, community health boards, tribal health, and/or community stakeholders working on community level health assessments and implementation planning. REMINDER: Minnesota State Loan Repayment Program (SLRP)

Minnesota's Loan Repayment Program (SLRP) is for primary care providers practicing in rural and urban Health Professional Shortage Areas in Minnesota. Applications are due by Friday, October 28. For more information, please contact health.loanforgiveness@state.mn.us

REMINDER: J-1 Visa and Waiver 

The Minnesota J-1 Visa Waiver Program is one strategy to address the shortage of physicians in rural and underserved urban areas. Many communities turn to international medical graduates (IMGs) and J-1 visa waivers to fill their physician vacancies. Through the J-1 Program, MDH can recommend up to 30 waivers per federal fiscal year for physicians living and working in Minnesota. Applications must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. CT, Tuesday, October 31. For more information, please contact MN_health.J1NHW@state.mn.us or call 651-201-3634.

REMINDER: Primary Care Residency Grant

The Primary Care Residency Grant program provides funding to expand the training of primary care physicians. The grant program assists existing or proposed primary care residency programs in Minnesota by funding costs associated with creating new residency programs and training eligible residents in newly created slots. Webinar: Post-acute transitional care using swing beds

Allevant Solutions LLC , a joint venture between Mayo Clinic and Select Medical, offers consulting services to rural hospitals and skilled nursing facilities to develop post-acute care programs focused on measured outcomes and evidence-based processes. Register for the Post-acute Transitional Care Using Swing Beds Webinar on Thursday, November 9, 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. CST. 

Note: The Minnesota Office of Rural Health and Primary Care (ORHPC) Flex Program is currently supporting a contract for six critical access hospitals to receive consulting services from Allevant. Interested parties can reach out to health.flex@state.mn.us.

Health equity narrative infrastructure project: Train-the-facilitator sessions 

The Health Equity Narrative Infrastructure Project (HENIP) is a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded collaboration between County Health Rankings and Roadmaps and Human Impact Partners with support from several other organizations, including the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH). The project helps organizations and people:

  • Understand narrative and how narrative works as a form of power;
  • Develop transformative narratives;
  • Inform a drafted national transformative narrative; and
  • Identify ways to apply narrative to work. 

The virtual Health Equity Narrative Infrastructure Project’s (HENIP) Train-the-Facilitator sessions will be held Tuesday, October 31 -Thursday, November 2, at 12:00 p.m. CT. Register here.
