MIIC forecaster changes reminder

The MIIC forecaster has been updated to align with the new 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine recommendations. The vaccine groups have been re-named to include:

  • COVID Routine includes the new 2023-2024 mRNA vaccine and future COVID-19 vaccines.
  • COVID Pandemic includes all original COVID-19 pandemic vaccine products, such as the bivalent.

The updates will ensure all people ages 5 years and older are recommended to receive one dose of the COVID-19 routine vaccine and people 6 months through 4 years receive two doses of Moderna or three doses of Pfizer vaccine, with at least one of the doses being the 2023-2024 COVID-19 routine vaccine. The MIIC forecaster will no longer forecast or recommend doses of COVID-19 pandemic vaccine.

People ages 5 years or older with at least one dose of COVID-19 pandemic vaccine will be shown as ‘complete’ in the forecaster for the COVID Pandemic vaccine group. That first dose will be validated; and all other doses will be recorded in a client’s immunization record but not evaluated.

Example 1: People 5 years of age or older

  • History: One or more doses of original COVID-19 pandemic vaccines, no doses of new routine COVID-19.
  • Recommends doses in new vaccine group (COVID-19 Routine). Recommended date will be when the person turned 6 months old.

The forecaster is a helpful tool, but we recommend to continue to use clinical judgement and the CDC: Interim Clinical Considerations: Use of COVID-19 Vaccines in the United States to inform decisions for immunization.
