It is anticipated within the next week that the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will approve the new COVID-19 monovalent vaccine for use this fall. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is planning to meet to discuss its recommended use on Tuesday, Sept. 12.
To prepare for this transition, pandemic COVID-19 vaccine providers who are not enrolled in the Minnesota Vaccines for Children (MnVFC) or the Uninsured and Underinsured Adult Vaccine (UUAV) program will lose access to vaccine ordering and wastage reporting in MIIC later this week. COVID-19 pandemic providers may continue to vaccinate with the bivalent vaccine until FDA authorizes the new vaccine and should continue to report all doses administered to MIIC.
Once FDA authorizes the new vaccine, all pandemic COVID-19 vaccine provider agreements will officially end, and all bivalent vaccines should be removed from all storage units and discarded. Please note that you must retain all records related to COVID-19 pandemic vaccine administration for three years.
Providers who are continuing as a MnVFC or UUAV providers should look for an announcement with details about pre-ordering vaccine this week. If you would like more information about how to enroll in either the MnVFC or the UUAV program, please email us at health.mdhvaccine@state.mn.us.
