Fall COVID vaccine update

It is expected that the new monovalent COVID-19 vaccine will be authorized or licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in September. When the new vaccines become available, they can be obtained through the private market for privately insured people, not by the federal government. Providers will need to be enrolled in our Minnesota Vaccine for Children (MnVFC) or Uninsured and Underinsured Adult Vaccine (UUAV) programs to receive publicly distributed vaccine for eligible children and adults.

Once the new vaccine is approved, the bivalent will no longer be authorized for use. During this transition, there may be a short period of time when the COVID-19 vaccine will be unavailable before the new vaccine arrives. Providers should take this time to remove all the bivalent vaccine from their freezer and fridge, report all wastage to the Minnesota Immunization Information Connection MIIC on Reporting Nonviable MDH Vaccine to MIIC, then discard all bivalent vaccine.

Any questions enrolling in our MnVFC or UUAV programs can be directed  to health.mdhvaccine@state.mn.us.

New COVID-19 vaccine training module

CDC has created a new training module titled, Immunization Courses: COVID-19 Vaccine Training: What Healthcare Professionals Need to Know. Content includes Emergency Use Authorization, safety monitoring, vaccine storage, handling, administration, and reporting.

This training will be updated as needed to reflect Fall 2023 recommendations and can be found at Immunization Courses: Webcasts and Self Study.
