May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month Shareables

Mental Health Awareness Month provides a dedicated time for people, organizations, and communities to join their voices to broadcast the message that mental health matters. The Minnesota Suicide Prevention Taskforce and MDH Suicide Prevention Unit worked together to develop a toolkit with ideas, resources, and messages to share to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and suicide prevention.

Download the toolkit:

The toolkit includes key messages, social media content, and shareable graphics. The toolkit has been designed for individuals, organizations, and communities and is only a starting point. We suggest that people using this toolkit tailor the content and use images that best engage with their communities.

Preventing Veteran Suicide Through Support, Education

Minnesota loses approximately 100 veterans each year to suicide. The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) is working to end this tragedy.

  • Veterans struggling with mental health issues and suicidal feelings can call 988, then press 1. 988-1 is the Military Crisis Line, a free, confidential resource for all service members, including members of the National Guard and Reserve, and Veterans, even if they’re not enrolled in VA benefits or health care.
  • Caring family members or friends of Veterans can call 988-1, as well. “If you’re worried about a Veteran, call 988-1 with them,” says the Veteran Suicide Prevention Coordinator for MDVA.

For more information on MDVA suicide prevention, visit the MDVA website at MinnesotaVeteran.org/EndVetSuicide.

Commemorating Memorial Day

To commemorate Memorial Day, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) will host special ceremonies at each of the three State Veterans Cemeteries in Duluth, Little Falls and Preston on Sunday, May 28 at 2 p.m. MDVA encourages members of the media and members of the community to attend a Memorial Day event to honor and remember service members in Minnesota who made the ultimate sacrifice and show support for the families left behind. Each program will include military honor guards, music and a guest speaker. To learn more about individual Memorial Day events at the State Veterans Cemeteries, visit MinnesotaVeteran.org/Events
