The Cultural, Faith, and Disability Communities COVID-19 Update is being sent to the following three MDH mailing lists to reduce duplication:
- Cultural, Faith, and Disability Communities COVID-19 Updates
- MN Immigrant and Refugee Health Announcements
- The Center for Health Equity
Today's COVID-19 updates include:
Status of COVID-19 in Minnesota:
Updated May 11, 2023
- Total positive including reinfections: 1,795,771
- Total deaths: 14,770
- Total cases requiring hospitalization: 85,123
- Total cases hospitalized in ICU: 14,352
Numbers are cumulative since Jan. 20, 2020.
The number of lab-confirmed positive tests among Minnesota residents will be updated weekly on Situation Update for COVID-19 with data as of 4 a.m. on the Tuesday prior. The page also includes a map of counties with confirmed cases, data by race/ethnicity, and more.
This total reflects only the results from laboratory testing. There are more cases in Minnesota, and the virus is circulating in communities. It is important for everyone to take steps to protect themselves and others through vaccination, testing, staying home when sick, and more.
Updated May 11, 2023
- People with at least one vaccine dose: 4,012,589
- People with completed vaccine series: 3,788,518
- People up to date with vaccine doses: 1,422,843
Vaccination Breakthrough Weekly Update:
Updated weekly, on Thursdays at 11 a.m.
All data is preliminary and may change as cases are investigated. Case and vaccine totals reflect only the results from laboratory testing and vaccinations that have been reported to the Minnesota Department of Health.
Data may not align exactly with the cases reported on other pages or dashboards due to differences in reporting lags and the frequency with which the data are updated.
What the vaccine breakthrough data do continue to show is vaccines provide protection against COVID-19, particularly against severe illness and hospitalization or death, and we are seeing this protection strengthened when people get a booster, especially for older adults. This means staying up to date on your COVID-19 vaccines, including a booster dose when eligible, is important.

Federal:
End of the Federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency
The federal COVID-19 public health emergency ended on May 11. The end of the federal public health emergency signifies another turning point in our progress to manage this disease that has impacted all of our lives over the last three and a half years.
We are in a better place now to manage COVID-19 because of the availability of things like testing, treatments, and especially vaccines. These tools help us lessen some of the severe impacts from this disease.
However, COVID-19 is not gone, and continued progress will depend on all of us continuing to use these tools and other prevention steps to help protect ourselves and others. Even as the public health emergency ends, it’s important to know that COVID-19 vaccines and treatments are still free at this time. People may see some changes to costs for COVID-19 tests depending on their insurance.
COVID-19 will remain part of MDH’s everyday work even as we continue to shift away from the emergency response mode we were in for a long time to our more traditional public health role. Minnesotans can continue to get the latest information on COVID-19 on our website at Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Request for Proposal: Infectious Disease Trusted Messenger Program for People Experiencing Homelessness
The purpose of the Trusted Messenger program is to equip people living and working in homeless or congregate living settings to learn and communicate with their peers about COVID-19 and other routine vaccinations to prevent infectious disease. Participating organizations will select Trusted Messengers from their programs, either clients or staff, who will share their own experiences, and provide a non-medical, non-threatening perspective to aid their peers in making decisions about vaccinations and other preventative measures. Participating organizations can apply for funding to provide peer education and outreach within their own organizations or to work in other settings in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH).
Request for Proposal: Eliminating Health Disparities Initiative 2023 - Evaluation Capacity Building Grant
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) announces the availability of funds to be used to support and strengthen the capacity of Eliminating Health Disparities Initiative (EHDI) grantees. The EHDI Evaluation Capacity Building Grant funds are specifically designed to support EHDI grantees in strengthening the prevention and early detection services they provide to cultural communities in Minnesota, including identifying best practices in the elimination of health disparities and addressing social determinants of health, building successful partnerships, networking, improving their ability to monitor their success, learning about successful strategies in other communities, documenting success and areas for growth, and reporting results.
Health Equity Networks Statewide Gathering
Join Network staff and folks from across the state as we meet each other and engage across sector, issue, community, and geography. We will be diving into the topic of intersectionality, exploring what this means and what it looks like for each of us, for our communities, and for our regions. We will also listen and learn from colleagues working and living at the intersections of mental health and rural living, as they share stories, data, information, and resources.
