Community means connection
Network member spotlight with Growing Up Healthy
In many ways, Fatima Ponciano grew up alongside Growing Up Healthy. In 2006, as a high school student, she started volunteering with Growing Up Healthy as a community representative. Now, as an Early Childhood Navigator with the organization, she says, “It’s been interesting and wonderful to see it grow.”
“When we started, we held community meetings to hear from people about the challenges and issues they were experiencing,” she says. “One of the things that we kept hearing was that people felt disconnected from the community and resources and also disconnected from each other.”

Spring is a time of hope and re-engagement
A note from Shor Salkas, project supervisor...
Spring is a time of hope and re-engagement, as flowers and buds pop out of the thawing ground. These small triumphs are testaments to perseverance and reconnection, and mirror the ongoing work of health equity. I don’t know about you, but I feel my heart and mind thawing too.
In April, the Minnesota Health Equity Network staff invites you to your regional gathering. Each coordinator is planning ways to connect about topics that are important in your communities and to amplify the work in each region. It is a humbling joy to learn about all the amazing efforts happening across Minnesota and in each Tribal nation.
In May, we host our next statewide gathering, where we will dive into intersectionality and explore what it means for us, our communities, and our regions. We will also learn from colleagues at the intersections of mental health and rural living.

To register for your regional gathering or the statewide gathering, check out our website: Minnesota Health Equity Networks: Events, training, and TA opportunities.
As the spring thaw continues, I invite you to deepen your knowledge, commitment, and action toward health equity. Pause, and take in the warming air and the sun on your cheeks. Be present in the moment. Channel your connections to your communities, to yourself, and to your dedication to building a better world.
May we all continue to grow together,
Shor

Training sessions and statewide meetings
May 17 (9:00-11:00 AM): Statewide gathering; topic: intersectionality and health equity Join Network staff and folks from across the state as we meet each other and engage across sector, issue, community, and geography. We will be diving into the topic of intersectionality, exploring what this means and what it looks like for each of us, for our communities, and for our regions. We will also listen and learn from colleagues working and living at the intersections of mental health and rural living, as they share stories, data, information, and resources.
Regional gatherings
Regional gatherings are free and open to all. Participate in one region, or more than one! All regional gatherings below are virtual unless otherwise indicated.

Request for proposals (RFP) due April 28
Proposals in response to the newest Regional Health Equity Network grant RFP are due by April 28, 2023 at 11:59 p.m.
Funded projects will work with partners to connect, strengthen, and amplify health equity efforts. Minnesota’s public health partnerships can build on successes and address the clear inequities that have long existed and may have been more evident during the COVID-19 response. Funded activities and projects will work toward shifting conditions that hold inequities in place and open pathways to advancing health equity and intentionally build relationships that are foundational for successful public health partnerships.
