The MIRHA Bi-Weekly update is a compilation of announcements from listservs, community, partners, and MIRHN (Metro Immigrant and Refugee Health Network) members to improve the health and engagement of immigrant and refugee communities in Minnesota. Sharing an item does not imply endorsement by the MDH Refugee and International Health program or MDH as a whole.

Connecting to faith, spirituality, and sacred spaces may be an important factor for Afghan newcomers settling into communities across the country. Faith-based supports can decrease social isolation, create a sense of belonging, and help newcomers heal from trauma. This panel discussion will explore how faith-based practices can help Afghan Muslims cope with the impacts of trauma and resettlement stressors, as well as support their transitions into their new communities.

The goal with this learning community is to provide a space to discuss Community Health Worker topics specific to local public health. At this meeting a selection of local public health agencies will share how Community Health Workers have been integrated into their teams including programs and services provided by CHWs, how positions are funded, and lessons learned. Anyone interested in learning more about community health workers in local public health is welcome to attend.

This interactive webinar focuses on the continuum of community participation as a strategy for engaging leaders to improve health outcomes. Participants will assess who is represented in collaborative efforts to ensure equitable participation and inclusion. Participants will discuss expressions of power and the types and distribution of power and leverage their understanding of power dynamics to create more equitable and inclusive partnerships. This course includes a variety of instructional methods including group discussion, break-out sessions, and hands-on learning activities and exercises. University of Minesota HR Immigration Specialist (Open until filled)
The Immigration Specialist provides centralized immigration and visa support to the Medical School at University of Minnesota as a key member of the Human Resources Immigration Support Team (IST). The IST is housed within the Dean’s Office Human Resources team and provides central standardized support for the immigration function of the clinical, research, and academic departments of the Medical School. - As the Surveillance Supervisor, you will direct the work of the Healthcare-Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance (HAI/AR) Surveillance Unit within the Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Prevention and Control (IDEPC) Division. This position will need to apply state-of-the-art technical expertise in epidemiologic methods and public health strategies required to develop, maintain and enhance statewide surveillance for pathogens often acquired in health care settings as well as direct efforts to contain transmission of these pathogens in partnership with health care partners, direct outbreak investigations related to health care settings, healthcare-associated pathogens, and/or medical products. St. Catherine Program Director for MPH in Global Health (Apply by 4/16)
The MPH in Global Health Program is focused on developing socially responsible leaders to combat public health issues by engaging and collaborating with local and global communities. The Program Director will provide strategic direction and leadership to the department. Additionally, this position is responsible for developing an innovative and respected program of research in their area of interest and expertise to advance the discipline and inform classroom teaching. Program Manager- Minnesota Afghan Program (Open until filled)
- CVT is seeking a Program Manager to lead the implementation of CVT’s new Afghan Program in Minnesota in partnership with the Afghan Cultural Society (ACS). The Afghan program will provide interdisciplinary mental health and community services both on-site at ACS and in a CVT outpatient clinic setting, offering individual, group and community-level interventions for Afghan humanitarian parolees. They will also provide team leadership and program management, ensure the smooth operation and delivery of services for clients and beneficiaries and foster and maintain a cohesive interdisciplinary care team as they provide rehabilitative care to Afghan survivors.

- CVT is seeking a Program Manager and Clinician at CVT's Healing Hearts program to provide team leadership, program management and clinical mental health services (psychotherapy or social work). Additionally, they will ensure the smooth operation and delivery of services for clients, foster and maintain cohesive interdisciplinary care teams as they provide rehabilitative care to survivors of torture & war trauma, and develop the program through collaboration with local stakeholders and survivor communities.
Karen Organization of Minnesota Youth Case Manager (Bilingual English-Karen) (Open until filled)
The Karen Organization of Minnesota (KOM) is seeking a bilingual (Karen-English) professional who is passionate to work with youth facing challenges related to substance abuse, homelessness, mental health, and family issues. The Youth Case Manager will work alongside KOM’s Community Health Educators, community leaders, parents, youth, and partner organizations. The Youth Case Manager will provide coordinated services to help youth from Burma in Minnesota connect to treatment, stable housing, and community. The Youth Case Manager will also facilitate group activities for at-risk youth. Worksites would include St. Paul Public School sites, other community locations in the twin cities and KOM office.

MN Department of Health Regional Health Equity Network Grant
DEADLINE: April 28
Funded projects will work with partners to connect, strengthen, and amplify health equity efforts. Minnesota’s public health partnerships can build on successes and address the clear inequities that have long existed and may have been more evident during the COVID-19 response. Funded activities and projects will work toward shifting conditions that hold inequities in place and open pathways to advancing health equity and intentionally build relationships that are foundational for successful public health partnerships.

Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant Application Available
Deadline: Monday, May 1
The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) is now accepting applications for the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center grant for funding for Cohort 9. Funding will go to create or expand community learning centers that provide academic support, enrichment, and youth development programs during non-school hours and summers.

The City of Bloomington Community-Based Mental Health Pop-Ups
DEADLINE: April 4
The City of Bloomington is seeking a vendor to facilitate a series of mental health pop-up events serving Bloomington, Edina and Richfield. The events will be focused on populations that are systemically excluded from mental health resources; the primary audience will be youth, with a specific focus on BIPOC communities.
The events will raise awareness about the importance of youth mental health and increase opportunities for community members to engage with one another. Attendees will share, connect, and learn about mental health resources and the distinct needs of their communities. Venders will partner with trusted messengers to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate information. The pop-up events will be held in various informal settings, from barber shops to cafes, to mobilize existing community relationships.

Minnesota Humanities Center Board – The board serves as an advisory body for the Minnesota Humanities Center. The Minnesota Humanities Center conducts professional development opportunities for educators and the public, creates and disseminates one-of-a-kind educational resources, and partners with a variety of communities and organizations to offer humanities-based programs statewide.

Governor’s Workforce Development Board – The Governor’s Workforce Development Board (GWDB) is Minnesota’s federally required state workforce development board under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). The GWDB advises the Governor, state agencies, and the Legislature on issues related to the state’s public workforce development system, and oversees the state’s four-year WIOA State Plan.

National Resources Center for Refugees, Immigrants, and Migrants (NRC-RIM) Updates
Designing Community-Based Communication Campaigns
How can health advocates, community health workers (CHWs), outreach workers, and community members best reach the segments of their community with critical health messaging, battling misinformation and building on their trusted community relationships, when they have limited funding or expertise? Migrant Clinicians Network’s (MCN’s) new communication manual, Designing Community-Based Communication Campaigns, available in English and Spanish, seeks to equip communities with detailed information so they can do just that.

NRC-RIM and Partners release Ramadan materials
As Ramadan begins in April, there has been some concern that receiving a vaccine could be considered breaking fast, or that it may not be halal. Encourage vaccines, boosters, and other COVID-19 safety measures with these resources.
NRC-RIM and partners have created a series of videos and other resources about Ramadan faith leaders addressing potential questions or concerns from members of Muslim communities.
