Spring Flood Update

Spring Flood 2023

Spring is on it's way. The National Weather Service Twin Cities provided an update and what to watch out for this Spring:

  • Flooding in the upper Mississippi, Minnesota, and Chippewa River basins is well above normal for late March.
  • A slow melting period is possible throughout the end of March with a 7-10 day temperature and precipitation pattern.
  • Major flooding concerns will vary on rainfall and temperature conditions as April gets closer.
  • In the Red River Valley, the risk for significant (moderate or higher) flooding has increased due to additional snowfall and delayed melt conditions. More information can be found through the Grand Forks Flood Outlook.
  • More information is available through the NWS Twin Cities 2023 Spring Flood Outlook.

The Emergency Preparedness and Response Division at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) facilitated an agency-wide meeting to provide situational awareness of the spring flood outlook and review potential MDH response activities should we have major flooding. MDH staff were encouraged to review and update any fact sheets and plans related to flooding. MDH also participated in a state agencies flood outlook meeting hosted by Homeland Security Emergency Management.
