Only give one bivalent booster

Once a person has completed a COVID-19 primary vaccine series and received the most recent bivalent booster recommended by CDC, they are up to date on their COVID-19 vaccines. There are no recommendations for a person to get a second bivalent booster. For more details including recommendations and schedules, refer to Interim Clinical Considerations for Use of COVID-19 Vaccines and Stay Up to Date with COVID-19 Vaccines Including Boosters. If an additional dose of COVID-19 vaccine bivalent booster is inadvertently administered, refer to Interim Clinical Considerations for Use of COVID-19 Vaccines: Appendix D. Vaccine administration errors and deviations.

Reminder: Check COVID-19 vaccine expiration dates

Please remember to check expiration dates before administering any vaccine. MDH has had several reports of vaccine providers administering expired COVID-19 vaccine. Visit expiration checkers for the most up-to-date information. Remember to clearly mark beyond use dates (BUD) on vials when vaccine is moved from ultra-cold or regular freezer to ensure the expiration date of the vial is not before the BUD. Pay attention to both the expiration and BUD to prevent using expired vaccine.

If a vaccine error does occur refer to: CDC: Interim Clinical Considerations for Use of COVID-19 Vaccines: Appendix D. Vaccine administration errors and deviations.

Moderna bivalent pediatric vaccine order quantity update

Federal supplies of the Moderna bivalent pediatric COVID-19 vaccine for age 5 and under remain limited. To ensure that enough vaccine is available for those who need it, the minimum order quantity has been reduced to 20 doses per order. The vaccine unit of sale NDC for this vaccine is 80777-0283-99. As a reminder, one carton of this vaccine contains 20 doses in 10 two-dose vials.

We recommend opting out of ancillary kits when placing orders for Moderna bivalent pediatric vaccines as the kits will be shipped to support 100 administrations per kit. Even if 20 doses are ordered, ancillary kits supporting 100 doses will be shipped. To prevent an excess of supplies please make note in the shipping information in MIIC if you do not wish to receive the supplies.
