Updates on Moderna monovalent COVID-19 vaccine

Moderna 10-dose per vial and Moderna 5-dose per vial monovalent products for people age 6 years and older are set to expire in early April. There will not be additional shelf-life extensions for these products. Any Moderna monovalent products for ages 6 to 11 years and 12 years and older ordered in the next few weeks will be short-dated and will expire in early April.

Moderna monovalent COVID-19 vaccines will be available for order through March 13 to complete primary series vaccinations. After March 13, Pfizer (age 6 years and older) and Novavax (age 12 years and older) will be the only primary series monovalent vaccine products available for order.

Please be aware that dependent on the date of the first Moderna monovalent dose administered, the same product might be unavailable to complete the primary series. In this case, a different COVID-19 vaccine may be administered at a minimum interval of 28 days from the last COVID-19 vaccine dose. Refer to CDC: Clinical Guidance for COVID-19 Vaccination; Interchangeability of COVID-19 vaccine products and direct any questions regarding clinic guidance to health.covid.vaccine@state.mn.us.

Questions regarding ordering vaccine can be sent to health.mdhvaccine@state.mn.us.

Future direction of COVID-19 vaccines

On Feb. 24, CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) met to discuss the latest data on COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness, safety, and coverage, as well as potential updates to future COVID-19 vaccination efforts. For more information about the meeting refer to CDC: ACIP Meetings Information for more information.

No votes or recommendations were made, but the discussion included an update on vaccine safety, a risk-benefit assessment for bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccination, and anticipated updates to COVID-19 vaccine recommendations. CDC and ACIP members supported plans to streamline and simplify COVID-19 vaccine recommendations this fall.

ACIP and CDC continue to emphasize the benefits of staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccination, including the completion of a primary series in protecting people against severe disease, hospitalization, and death.
