Newly Released 2020 National and State Level WIC Reach Data
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service (USDA FNS) released National and State Level Estimates of WIC Eligibility and Program Reach in 2020 interactive data. These are the latest graphics in a series of annual reports on WIC eligibility.
Some Minnesota WIC highlights include:
- Minnesota continues to have one of the highest rates of WIC reach for all groups compared to other states.
- In 2020, the national coverage rate was 50.2%, and the Minnesota rate was 61.2%.
- Minnesota WIC eligible numbers decreased, and participation rates increased in 2020, while the overall number of WIC eligible remained stable nationally.
- Minnesota serves higher rates of Hispanic/Latino, Black Not Hispanic, and Multiple Race groups than White Not Hispanic.
Additional information:
- In 2020, FNS enhanced the methodologies used to produce the eligibility estimates related to adjunct eligibility.
- We cannot compare previous reports to the 2020 report, although the 2020 report does include recalculated data from previous years.
- Preliminary 2022 Minnesota Information System data shows an increase in White Not Hispanic and Hispanic all Races participation numbers.

New Advisory Group Representative for Caseload Group 6

 Thank you to the Minnesota WIC Staff who have become International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC), the highest accreditation in lactation! Minnesota WIC is proud to have over 25 IBCLCs across the state and many additional staff working toward this rigorous certification. Congratulations to the newest IBCLCs in MN WIC - Kristen Bricko, Kylie Saari, Yvonne Sievert, and Rebecca Sokoloski! Thank you for providing lactation support to WIC families and guidance to WIC colleagues.
Topic of the Month - Whole Grains
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) added whole grains to the WIC food package in 2009 to encourage consumption of whole grains among WIC participants. The addition of whole grains in the daily diet provides many health benefits, including lowering the risk of stroke, diabetes, heart disease, assisting in controlling cholesterol levels, weight, and blood pressure, and reducing inflammation in the body. Training Reminder
The Intuitive Eating: Promoting Positive Attitudes and Behaviors Within Families training is coming up at the end of the month.
Date: Friday, March 31, 2023, from 8:30 am to 10:00 am.
Description: In this presentation, Dr. Blair Burnette, PhD will introduce a comprehensive overview of intuitive eating and its evidence base. She will also provide concrete suggestions on how to promote intuitive eating among caregivers and within families.
Registration: Registration will be completed in the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) Learning Center.
