Novavax COVID-19 vaccine available for ordering in MIIC

Novavax monovalent vaccine was recently authorized as a one-time booster dose for adults ages 18 years and older in limited situations. It is now available for ordering in MIIC. Please refer to the Oct. 21, COVID-19 Weekly Provider Update for additional details on the Novavax booster.

Moderna shelf-life extension

Moderna is currently evaluating lots of Moderna 10 and Moderna 5 vaccine for submission to the FDA for shelf-life extension. The first submission for extension is anticipated in the next few days. FDA will require time following submission to review these lots, so some vaccine may expire before this process is complete. Please quarantine and keep both Moderna 10 and Moderna 5 lots at correct storage temperature and conditions as they reach their expiration date to avoid possible administration errors with expired vaccine.

CDC has clinical materials outlining correct storage and handling practices for Moderna vaccines. If you need to look-up the expiration date of your Moderna vaccines, please use their vial lookup tool: Moderna Vial Expiration Checker. Please be aware that this expiry lookup page and CDC's COVID-19 Vaccine Lot Number and Expiration Date Report will not be updated until after FDA approves the requests for extension.

New CDC Webinar: Recommendations for bivalent COVID-19 booster doses

CDC is offering a series of brief webinars (15 to 20 minutes each) to educate immunization providers with the most up-to-date information on the COVID-19 vaccines, available at COVID-19 Vaccine Webinars. The new Recommendations for Bivalent COVID-19 Booster Doses course discusses recommendations for a bivalent COVID-19 booster dose, the interim COVID-19 immunization schedule, COVID-19 vaccine products, and recommended actions for addressing bivalent and monovalent COVID-19 vaccine administration errors.

Continuing education credit will be available through March 18, 2023.

COVID-19 and benefits of COVID-19 bivalent booster vaccination

Recent Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports (MMWR) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) support the benefits of COVID-19 bivalent booster vaccination. Use this information in discussions with patients.

The report shows that eligible adults age 18 years and older should receive an updated bivalent COVID-19 mRNA vaccine to maximize protection against BA.4/BA.5 lineages and to prevent COVID-19–associated hospitalization.

Please continue entering data into MIIC in a timely way
