Minnesota HIV Outbreaks Virtual Learning Series: U=U and People Who Use Drugs
Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022, 5:30 – 7 p.m. CT
Please join us for a virtual training aimed to build HIV prevention and treatment skills to respond to the HIV outbreaks in Hennepin and Ramsey counties and in the Duluth area.
U=U is scientifically sound and supported by leading worldwide institutions and the federal government. Knowledge of U=U increases testing uptake, and among those living with HIV, U=U awareness has been linked to improved mental health, reduced internal and anticipated stigma, and better adherence and viral suppression. So why is U=U not talked about with people who inject drugs?
This program will focus on how providers of HIV prevention and treatment, harm reduction, substance use, overdose prevention, healthcare for people who use drugs, and other related services can incorporate U=U messaging in outbreak response efforts. A brief epidemiology presentation with the most recent data on each HIV outbreak will be followed by U=U education, discussion, and skills building on U=U for people who inject drugs.
Objectives:
- Share the most recent epidemiology of the HIV outbreaks in the Twin Cities and Duluth area, respectively.
- Describe evidence proving that U=U and current federal and state U=U implementation.
- Discuss the potential benefits of U=U education for people who inject drugs.
- Identify how to leverage U=U education to improve health outcomes and reduce stigma.
