Farm to school and ECE local food incentive programs

Farm to School and ECE Local Food Incentive Programs: The National Landscape Hosted by NFSN and MSU

October 6, 2022 2 p.m.

Register

Want to learn more about Farm to School and ECE local food incentive programs operating across the country? Tune in to this webinar for a review of different designs of statewide incentive programs as well as support available for policy advocacy and education. Results from a national survey will also be shared, highlighting the educational needs and values of partners interested in learning more about procurement incentives.

Local food incentive programs provide additional money to school and ECE child nutrition programs with the intention to stimulate increased purchasing of local foods.

High interest in and increased adoption of these programs call for more communication among partners. This webinar is the first in a forthcoming series on how local food incentive programs are implemented that will feature the people who run, evaluate, and support them. Speakers include:

  • Cassandra Bull, Policy Intern, National Farm to School Network and former Environmental Research Fellow at the Tufts University Institute of the Environment
  • Karen Spangler, Policy Director, National Farm to School Network
  • Colleen Matts, Director, Farm to Institution Programs, Michigan State University Center for Regional Food Systems

Trauma-informed training with Peacemakers

Trauma-Informed Training with Peacemakers to Begin in October

As we look to becoming more trauma-informed in our SHIP work, training sessions with Peacemaker Resources will begin this fall. These classes will be for us to learn more about becoming trauma-informed within our SHIP work before we bring it to our partners.

Two different class offerings will be available, and each class will meet for 90 minutes for three weeks. We recommend that you attend all three weeks for each class, as they build upon skills over time. All LPH SHIP Staff and their local public health colleagues are welcome to attend. Classes for your SHIP partners within the community will be held next year.

Trauma-Sensitive Practices and Resiliency: A Foundation for SHIP

Current research shows a high percentage of individuals are exposed to trauma and toxic stress. Trauma can undermine a person’s ability to learn and form healthy relationships This class was offered to all LPH SHIP staff last spring and this summer. If you are new to SHIP or want a refresher, this is the place to start.

  • understand how to better understand the impact of trauma on themselves and those they work with
  • Improved engagement with colleagues
  • imbed trauma-informed principles in their work

Offered two times:

Mondays October 24, 31, November 7, 2022 (1:30-2:30 p.m.)  Registration for Fall 2022 Workshops on Resiliency Practices for Workplaces (google.com)

South St. Paul’s Safe Routes to School program is making an impact

Dakota County SHIP has a long-standing relationship with South St Paul School District to promote SHIP throughout the district. Kaposia Education Center has been a key partner in the success in the district and in the implementation of a Safe Routes to School Program in the schools. The effort has included story strolls that place a children's story along the route, infrastructure improvements to enhance street crossings and walking school buses to support the safety of students walking to school.  The effort by the school district is highly successful and has drawn many accolades.

To learn more about it, check out the six-minute YouTube video that was produced by South St. Paul elementary school counselor Travis Truhler, an active living advocate, safe route supporter and SHIP project champion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwWzfCIsKwA
