CDC interim clinical considerations updates

On September 2, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated their Interim Clinical Considerations for Use of COVID-19 Vaccines.

Summary of recent changes:

  • New booster recommendation for people ages 12 years and older to receive 1 bivalent mRNA booster after completion of a monovalent primary series; it replaces all prior booster recommendations for this age group
  • Recommendations for use of a bivalent Moderna booster dose in people ages 18 years and older
  • Recommendations for use of a bivalent Pfizer-BioNTech booster dose in people ages 12 years and older
  • Updated guidance for observation periods following COVID-19 vaccination
  • Updated guidance on COVID-19 vaccination and multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS) in children (MIS-C) and in adults (MIS-A)

Bivalent vaccine booster ordering in MIIC

The order event for Moderna and Pfizer bivalent vaccine boosters is now open in MIIC. It will continue to be open every week moving forward.

  • Pfizer vaccine ordered on Thursday (Sept. 8) will start being delivered the week of Sept. 12.
  • Moderna vaccine ordered on Thursday (Sept. 8) will start being delivered the week of Sept. 19.
  • Please refer to the Sept. 2 provider bulletin for additional details and considerations for these vaccine presentations.
  • Ordering event structures will be changed starting the week of Sept. 12 to differentiate between monovalent and bivalent vaccines instead of by age group.

COVID-19 product information in MIIC

Providers can enter all currently available COVID-19 vaccine products, including the bivalent booster formulas, into MIIC. Please verify you are reporting the correct CPT/CVX codes for the vaccine product you are administering. For details reference the Entering COVID-19 Product Information in MIIC.
