May 25 was George Floyd Remembrance Day, marking the second anniversary of Mr. Floyd’s murder by Minneapolis police officers. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by all of the tragedies going on in the world, from the everyday effects of systemic racism to gun violence to war. We hope you can take some time this long weekend to rest, remember those we have lost, and reflect on the progress we have made, even though there is still work to do. If you need support, the Employee Assistance Program offers free, confidential counseling.
Redesign Conversation cancelled for today: Today’s Redesign Conversation session was cancelled, but we will be back next week for the Strategic Planning Inspiration Session about Workplace and Culture with Pam Malterud. If you missed last week’s session on Communication and Engagement, you can still contribute your feedback: HRD Strategic Objectives Inspiration Sessions: Communications & Engagement (Leave Feedback). As usual, you can find the slides and recordings in the Files tab and Stream tab.
Complete Required Training by July 29, 2022: MMB has created three new policy acknowledgements to make sure staff are aware of recent updates to the Code of Ethical Conduct, the Appropriate Use of Electronic Communication and Information Technology, and the policy around Mobile Device Use. All MDH staff need to complete these policy acknowledgements in ELM by July 29. For more information, see the Employee Training Requirements page on the Intranet.
Recordings and Resources from the HRD Employee Appreciation Mindfulness Presentation: If you weren’t able to join us for last week’s mindfulness presentation (or would like to see it again!), the recording of the session with Mariann Johnson is available until June 10: Minnesota Dept of Health: Enhancing Personal Wellbeing and Resilience, Mindfully. We’ve also shared the slides that Mariann used and some resources from the Bakken Center in the General channel of our MDH_HRD Team.
Order any supplies you need by June 6, 2022: The end of the fiscal year (June 30th) is coming up quickly – which means that we’re starting to see deadlines for completing orders of supplies. The deadline for non-IT purchase requests (such as printers) is June 6, so if you or your team needs anything, please submit your orders now. Keep in mind that many items are currently on back order and will take some time to arrive, so the sooner you order, the better.
This week, MMB rescinded HR/LR Policy 1446, COVID-19 Proof of Vaccination and Testing, which requires staff who are working at the workplace or providing agency services outside of their homes to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or to undergo weekly testing.
State and Federal surveyors still need to comply with #PL106.01, as their requirements are different based on Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) rule and standards of protecting those in the facilities they survey.
The State of Minnesota Employee Status and Health Screening continues to remain a requirement for employees entering the workplace. Starting Monday, May 30, MDH recommends the use of the CDC COVID-19 Community Level interactive tool to guide in-person interactions in buildings. It will be important for employees to check the COVID-19 by County page on a regular basis. Additionally, we strongly encourage employees to wear face coverings in all state buildings unless you are alone in your cube or office.
What this means for you
When visiting any MDH building, check the COVID-19 Community Level interactive tool for the county you’ll be in to ensure you’re taking the recommended precautions. MDH continues to recommend and support mask wearing when indoors to help decrease community spread.
If the county where your office is located is in the high level of community spread, virtual meetings are recommended, and if the only option is an in-person meeting, then limit the number of attendees to half the capacity of what is listed on the Outlook room information.
Working at an off-site location? Be sure to follow the rules and guidelines of the places you’re visiting.

People may choose to mask at any time. People with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask. Masks are recommended in indoor public transportation settings and may be required in other places by local or state authorities.

The WLT Transition Planning team would like to thank you for taking the time to complete the Workspace Needs Assessment survey. We had 125 responses, which is fantastic! A full copy of the survey summary is posted in the HRD Documents library on SharePoint, if you’d like to read through it.
Here are the highlights:
- Most staff intend to use the office spaces on a monthly or quarterly basis
- They are most likely to obtain office supplies, attend/host training or team meetings, collaborate with teammates, and process documents/mail/deposits/print
- Conference rooms, private office/huddle rooms, and workstations will be needed, with an easy-to-use reservation system
- The Neighborhood Center is important for collecting supplies, including PPE
- Staff expect technology set-up will be the same as their home office, such as two monitors, docking station, and wireless keyboard/mouse.
- Although secure file storage is still needed, less overall file storage space is anticipated in the future
- A dedicated work and storage area should be assigned for various teams
- Retain the OHFC/HCALP area for HRD’s use
If you have questions about the survey or the Work Life Transition project, please feel free to reach out to Susan Winkelmann or leave your question in the HRD Feedback Box. Thank you again for your participation in this survey!
This week, one of our HRD engineers, Fernando Nacionales, received the Major General L. Dean Fox Award for his service as a National Guard Member.
The 133rd Airlift Wing shared this message about his accomplishments on their Facebook page:
Congratulations to Maj Fernando Nacionales, 133rd Civil Engineer Squadron, on receiving the Major General L. Dean Fox Award at the National Guard Bureau level. Maj Nacionales distinguished himself by volunteering to be a project manager establishing alternate care facilities for COVID-19 patients in MN. He was also sought by the AF Civil Engineer Center for his expertise where he traveled to Tyndall AFB to assist with “Base of the Future” AF initiatives. Lastly, Maj Nacionales led 400 Airmen and contractors during a recent AFCENT deployment, heavily involved in assisting over 15,000 evacuees out of Afghanistan.
Thank you for your service, Fernando! We’re so proud to have you be part of HRD.
