COVID-19 vaccine shelf-life extension

Pfizer Tris vaccine

The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) authorized a shelf-life extension for Pfizer Tris pediatric (orange cap) and Pfizer Tris adult (gray cap) COVID-19 vaccines from nine to 12 months. Vials stored consistently at ultra-low temperatures may remain in use for up to 12 months beyond the manufacture date printed on the vials and cartons. Vials stored in refrigeration are not eligible for extension, regardless of the expiration date.

Janssen vaccine

The FDA authorized a shelf-life extension for the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) COVID-19 vaccine from nine to 11 months. This extension applies to all refrigerated (2-8 degrees Celsius) vials of Janssen COVID-19 vaccine that have been held in accordance with the manufacturer’s storage conditions. Vaccine providers should visit Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine Expiry Checker to confirm the latest expiration dates of vaccine.

Moderna shipping timeline

Moderna COVD-19 vaccine shipments may be delivered sooner than expected. Moderna orders are typically shipped in 2-3 days, but recently some orders have been shipped as quickly as overnight. If you are ordering Moderna vaccine, please be prepared for the potential that it may be delivered the next day.

NEW COVID-19 vaccine module

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in partnership with the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Pennsylvania Immunization Coalition, and the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, has developed a vaccine educational module entitled, Communicating about Vaccines – COVID-19 & More. This free training developed for adult and pediatric practitioners, immunization champions, and community members can be accessed through CHOP’s Online Learning for Healthcare Providers. Continuing education credits are available.
