On Jan. 7, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended shortening the interval for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine booster dose from six months to five months. This change now aligns with the booster dose interval for the Pizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.
All people age 12 years and older should receive a single-dose booster of COVID-19 vaccine after the last dose of the primary series. For those who are moderately or severely immunocompromised, the booster dose should be given after receiving an additional primary dose (3rd dose). For more information, refer to CDC: Interim Clinical Considerations for Use of COVID-19 Vaccines: moderately or severely immunocompromised people.
The interval between the primary series and the booster is dependent on the vaccine that was administered for the primary series. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) included a helpful table about when to give boosters in a Jan. 7 news release found at Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update: FDA Shortens Interval for Booster Dose of Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine to Five Months.
A booster dose for children younger than 12 years is not recommended at this time. However, children should receive a booster dose at the age they become eligible, even if they were age 11 years or younger at the time of the primary series.
CDC: Interim Clinical Considerations for Use of COVID-19 Vaccines: Booster dose have been updated to reflect booster dose recommendations for people ages 12 through 15 years, mRNA booster dose intervals, and an additional primary dose for moderately to severely immunocompromised children. Please review these interim clinical considerations and our COVID-19 Vaccine Provider Updates January 7, 2022, issue for additional details.
