Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Tools and Resources for Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

September is suicide prevention awareness month – a time to raise awareness on this often stigmatized and challenging topic. Together we can lift our voices to share hope and vital information across Minnesotans.

Suicide Prevention Awareness Month Email and Social Media Toolkit

We encourage everyone to participate in sharing messages and resources to prevent suicide this suicide prevention month. MDH, in partnership with the State Suicide Prevention Taskforce, developed a social media and email toolkit with plug and play messages that can be shared with others.

The toolkits are designed to be customizable, and we encourage you to edit the messages to fit your community’s needs. We also encourage you to add images and graphics that best reflect your community.

You Matter.

Resources such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the Crisis Text Line are critical services for Minnesotans. The services provide support, referrals, and guidance to those who need mental health support and help preventing suicide.

The Minnesota Department of Health, along with the State Suicide Prevention Taskforce, developed materials to promote these resources in Minnesota. The materials can be used by state agencies, schools, community organizations, and anyone interested in sharing messages about these services.

The message “You Matter” was developed by the taskforce to emphasize the important role we all have to play in preventing suicide.

We encourage anyone interested in using these resources to do so.

"Suicide remains a leading cause of death in Minnesota. We know how to intervene, help people decrease their suffering, and avoid suicide. Student Mental Health Support Toolkit

Mental Health America has launched their annual Back to School Toolkit to give parents, teachers, and school personnel the tools and resources they need to support their children’s mental health.

This school year brings increased fear and trauma for many students after more than a year away from in-person learning. This year’s toolkit is full of hands-on materials that can help students navigate all the emotions and challenges of the new school year. The toolkit includes: fact sheets, key messages, statistics, worksheets, and more. Download the free Facing Fears, Supporting Students Toolkit.

We’re listening: Please provide input for the Suicide Prevention State Plan

The Suicide Prevention Unit in collaboration with the Minnesota Suicide Prevention Taskforce are in the early stages of planning the 2023-2027 Minnesota State Suicide Prevention Plan. The plan will be used to determine priorities for available funding, training opportunities, and other strategies to support suicide prevention across the state.

To kick off community engagement to help create the next state plan, please provide feedback in this short two-question survey. Your answers will help us determine priorities for suicide prevention efforts in our state. Visit the Suicide Prevention State Plan Community Engagement to participate in the short survey. Please encourage your members to also share their feedback.

Learn more about the current Minnesota state Suicide Prevention Plan (PDF).

This is the first in a series of engagement opportunities in the upcoming year to gather community feedback to identify community priorities for inclusion in the state plan.
