Community Vaccination Sites Winding Down

After reaching the goal set by President Biden and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to vaccinate 70% of Minnesota’s 18-and-older population with at least one dose by July 4, Governor Walz announced that the State of Minnesota will wind down its mass vaccination sites.

All Community Vaccination Program sites, except for Mall of America, will close by August 8:

  • State-run locations in Duluth, Rochester, Mankato, St. Cloud, St. Paul (Roy Wilkins), Lino Lakes, and Oakdale are only offering second doses and will close on or before August 6.

  • MSP Terminal 1 (terminal access required), and MSP Terminal 2 (open to general public) will continue to offer the Johnson & Johnson one-dose vaccine for people 18 years or older through August 7.

  • The Mall of America site will remain open (appointments and walk-ins) and administer the Pfizer vaccine to Minnesotans 12 years of age and older. Parent or guardian consent is required for people younger than 18 years old.

The State of Minnesota and health care providers established a network of around 700 providers offering free COVID-19 vaccines across the state, including at hospitals, doctor’s offices, local pharmacies, and pop-up community vaccination events. Minnesotans who have not received their vaccine are encouraged to Find Vaccine Locations close to them.

What's New

Myocarditis and Pericarditis

Some people who have received the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines have had rare cases of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and pericarditis (inflammation of the lining outside the heart).

In most cases, symptoms began a few days after the second dose of COVID-19 vaccine and went away quickly. Most cases of myocarditis and pericarditis have been in young men. The chance of having this occur is very low. Seek medical attention right away if you have any of the following symptoms after receiving COVID-19 vaccine:

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Feelings of having a fast-beating, fluttering, or pounding heart

Resuming Use of Water Fountains

Water fountains are an important resource in public spaces, especially during summer when heat and dehydration can be the most dangerous.

The risk of getting COVID-19 from touching a solid surface (like a water fountain button) is low, and COVID-19 has not been found in drinking water. Therefore, water fountains and bottle fillers can be used during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shutting off water fountains or other fixtures for long periods of time can increase the risk of water quality problems, including growth of dangerous bacteria like Legionella. Buildings and fixtures that have low use or are in unoccupied spaces should be reactivated with care.

Visit Resuming Use of Water Fountains: COVID-19 for guidance on how to safely reopen water fountains, information on cleaning and disinfection, and resources on heat-related illness.
