Essential Issues Around COVID-19 Vaccines for Vulnerable Populations Webinar
Date: Every Tuesday beginning May 25 until Tuesday June 15
Time: 3:00 p.m. CST
The world has changed significantly since the beginning of the year, but the important role of the community health worker (CHW) and other community outreach workers remains critical to improving the health of many communities. As we grapple with the dangers of the pandemic, it is clear that CHWs have a critical role to play in helping the community better understand how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and mitigate the fear and uncertainty surrounding vaccines. But information about COVID-19 vaccines is changing rapidly and it is challenging to keep up with the latest knowledge and strategies.
Seeking to respond to critical gaps in knowledge and provide resources necessary to respond to the pandemic, Migrant Clinicians Network has developed an educational series in Spanish on COVID-19 vaccines for CHWs. This series consists of four sessions and will provide resources and training to combat myths about vaccines, address clinical questions about the available vaccines, discuss the impact of vaccines on the workplace, and to explore the mental health implications of COVID-19. Our panel of experts will provide a wide range of resources and information to help CHWs better meet the needs of the communities they serve. We invite you to join us in this important conversation.

Following New CDC Guidance, Governor Walz Announces End to Statewide Face Covering Requirement
Governor Tim Walz announced the end of Minnesota’s statewide mask requirement, aligning Minnesota with new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance on face coverings. Minnesotans who are not fully vaccinated are strongly recommended to wear face coverings indoors.
Private businesses and local municipalities may still put in place face covering requirements. And Minnesota’s Safe Learning Plan, along with the existing face covering guidance for schools and child care settings, remain in effect.
The CDC announced Thursday that masks are no longer required for fully-vaccinated individuals, either indoors or outside. Minnesotans should follow CDC guidance and wear masks in medical settings and on public transportation, whether or not they are fully vaccinated.
COVID-19 Vaccine Ambassador
Hearing a lot of questions about the COVID-19 vaccine in your community?
Request for a vaccine ambassador trained by the Minnesota Department of Health to come out to speak at your next virtual community meeting, staff get-together, or community event. A free service for community by community, our diverse team of vaccine ambassadors combine accurate, up-to-date information about the COVID-19 vaccine with their lived experience as members of different cultural communities. The vaccine ambassadors take a nonjudgmental approach to providing information about the COVID-19 vaccine. The goal is not to convince others of what to do, but to hold space for community to ask questions in a safe place and equip them with the information they need to make informed decisions about their health.
To request a speaker, please fill out the COVID-19 Vaccine Speakers Request Survey at least one week before the event. Email health.vaccinespeakerrequests@state.mn.us with any questions.
*We will fill as many requests as we can, but may not be able to fill all requests depending on capacity
Small Cities Coronavirus CDBG-CV Program
Deadline: June 1, 2021
The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) received a special allocation of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) funds. This allocation was authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), Public Law 116-136, which was signed by President Trump on March 27, 2020, to respond to the growing effects of this historic public health crisis.
DEED will administer the Community Development Block Grant Coronavirus (CDBG-CV) to support Minnesota’s COVID-19 response efforts. The CDBG CARES Act funding (CDBG-CV) is being directed towards projects that assist communities, particularly low-to-moderate income communities, in preventing, preparing for, and responding to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The State of Minnesota is seeking applications for activities listed in the Eligibility category.
State of Minnesota has been awarded the following in 3 funding rounds:
- Round 1 - non-entitlement jurisdictions - $11,217,782
- Round 2 - entitlement and non-entitlement jurisdictions - $17,464,118
- Round 3 - entitlement and non-entitlement jurisdictions - $8,918,968
Total CDBG-CV funds awarded to the State of Minnesota is $37,600,868.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is exercising its authority to establish a six-year period of performance and expenditure deadline in the CDBG-CV grant agreement. In addition, to further ensure the expedited use of funds, HUD is imposing an alternative requirement that each grantee must expend at least 80% of all CDBG-CV funds no later than the end of the third year of the period of performance established by the CDBG-CV grant agreement.

NewSchools Venture Fund accepting applications for Racial Equity Grants
Deadline: June 4, 2021
The NewSchools Venture Fund believes that the freedom to thrive is every person's fundamental right, and that access to a great education, regardless of race or ethnicity, is essential to that freedom. Students and families are navigating the impacts of COVID-19 and a broader racial reckoning in our society. Schools, community-based organizations, and trusted leaders are working hard to meet student needs, and there are brilliant solutions borne from the lived experiences of people of color. NewSchools' first Racial Equity funding opportunity will provide $1.5 million in "dream capital" to innovators of color with bold ideas to advance racial equity in education. Given the prevalence of anti-Black racism in society, and its impact on outcomes for Black students, the organizations plans to allocate at least 50 percent of the funds to Black leaders. The decision-makers for this funding opportunity will be parents, students, and education innovators of color.
For more information, please visit the NewSchools Venture Fund website.
