February 11, 2021
Good afternoon,
Here are the COVID-19 vaccine provider updates for 2/5-2/11.
The provider guide has been updated to reflect changes with CDC’s interim clinical considerations (last updated Feb. 10, 2021):
- New recommendations for preventing, reporting, and managing mRNA COVID-19 vaccine administration errors (refer to CDC’s Interim Clinical Considerations for Use of mRNA, COVID-19 Vaccines Currently Authorized in the United States, Appendix A. Vaccine administration errors and deviations).
- Clarification on contraindications and precautions for people with a reaction to a vaccine or injectable therapy that contains multiple components, one of which is polyethylene glycol (PEG), another mRNA vaccine component, or polysorbate (page 14).
- Updated information on delayed, local injection-site reactions after the first mRNA vaccine dose (page 14-15).
The screening and agreement template has been updated on MDH's COVID-19 Vaccine Providers webpage. In the screening question section, we added a question about the correct age to receive the vaccine being administered. In the information for health care professionals section, we added information on dermal filler(s).
This new presentation is meant to supplement competency-based hands-on vaccine administration training. This training offers 0.5 contact hours and is available on MDH’s COVID-19 Vaccine Trainings for Health Professionals, under “Supplemental On-Demand Training for Vaccine Providers.”
It is a requirement to give all vaccine recipients the appropriate Emergency Use Authorization fact sheet and answer any questions before administering COVID-19 vaccines. Fact sheets for both products can be found on the FDA website, COVID-19 Vaccines. Translations are available for each vaccine product.
The state has modified its strategy for second dose ordering. We will begin shipping second doses on a just-in-time cadence, rather than delivering them a few days in advance of when you can begin administering them.
What this means moving forward:
- Sites that are due to receive second doses will receive them on Mondays of the week that you can begin administering them (pending inclement weather).
If you would like to see a summary of the history of COVID-19 vaccine orders that have been placed for your organization, log into the Minnesota Immunization Information Connection (MIIC) and click on “manage special vaccine event.”
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you for your flexibility and please reach out to health.mdhvaccine@state.mn.us with questions or concerns.
If you are redistributing COVID-19 vaccine, you should have a redistribution agreement in place. You must report vaccine redistribution in the COVID-19 Vaccine Redistribution Form. Learn more about COVID-19 vaccine redistribution at COVID-19 Vaccine: Redistribution and Off-site Vaccination Guide (PDF).
A person does not have to be a resident of Minnesota to get vaccinated here. Many people live in bordering states, but regularly seek medical care in Minnesota and/or are employed in Minnesota. It is allowable to vaccinate non-Minnesota residents if they fall into one of the priority groups currently eligible for COVID-19 vaccine.
Providers can view a history of their COVID-19 vaccine orders in the Minnesota Immunization Information Connection (MIIC). Click on “manage special vaccine events,” under “vaccine management.” Enter your provider pin number to view the history of COVID-19 doses shipped to your site.
If you do not have access to this feature in MIIC, please reach out to health.mdhvaccine@state.mn.us.
A reminder to all vaccinators to enter complete and accurate information for all clients receiving COVID-19 vaccine. Correct client name, date of birth, client address (where client lives, not where they are vaccinated), vaccination date, and vaccine product are crucial to quality data and reporting. The Minnesota Immunization Information Connection (MIIC) data quality team will continue to reach out to providers and work with them to correct data issues. Thank you for your attention to these data.
Please ensure that your organization is sending COVID-19 vaccine administration data to MIIC within 24 hours of dose administration. The MIIC outreach team will continue to reach out to organizations who are not meeting this data entry requirement.
Janssen has applied for Emergency Use Authorization of their one-dose COVID-19 vaccine from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA will meet on Feb. 26 to consider the application. Look for additional training and information about this additional vaccine the first week in March.
The Minnesota Immunization Information Connection (MIIC) will conduct a four-part webinar series. Organizations will have the opportunity to ask questions and see real-time navigation through the MIIC system at each webinar.
