COVID-19 Vaccine Provider Weekly Updates

Good afternoon,

Here are the COVID-19 vaccine provider updates for 1/29-2/4.

COVID-19 vaccine provider guide updates

The provider guide has been updated with the following information:

  • Laboratory testing: Interpretation of tuberculosis test results in vaccinated people. Find more information below, and in the provider guide on page 15.
  • Reporting vaccine wastage/spoilage: Two new resources were added to COVID-19 Vaccine Providers. Find more information on page 25 of the provider guide.
  • Recommended personal protective equipment (PPE) for administering COVID-19 vaccine was added to the intramuscular administration section on page 16.

COVID-19 vaccine redistribution guide updated

The COVID-19 Vaccine: Redistribution and Off-site Vaccination Guide (PDF) has been updated with details on how to report physical redistribution and ownership redistribution of COVID-19 vaccine. Reporting redistribution helps to keep your inventory up to date.

Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA)

It is important for all vaccine administrators to make sure they are giving the vaccination in the correct location. If not done correctly, shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) can occur, which can have lasting effects to the recipient. SIRVA is caused when the vaccine is given too high and too close to the shoulder joint. It can cause shoulder pain, limited range of motion, and may require ongoing medical intervention. Find more information and how to avoid SIRVA on page 16 of the provider guide.

Report SIRVA to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).

New MDH guidance on integrating COVID-19 vaccine with TB testing

MDH has developed guidance on integrating the COVID-19 vaccine with tuberculosis (TB) testing in accordance with CDC’s COVID-19 interim clinical considerations. See: Integrating COVID-19 Vaccination with Tuberculosis Testing (PDF).
