Culture is prevention: Preventing suicide through culture

Cultural values and practices build connectedness, model positive social norms, improve personal wellness, and contribute to many protective factors for health.

The Ain Dah Yung Center, an MDH suicide prevention community grantee, supports American Indian youth and families, and uses culture as a cornerstone behind it’s mission.

In the month of November, the Ain Dah Yung Center spread its Culture is Prevention message through a weeklong virtual summit for youth ages 8-25. The virtual summit brought youth together to share practices and raise awareness on tapping into culture to prevent suicide, tobacco, and substance use.

“It was really powerful,” said Travis Decory, Mino Oski cultural specialist and Ninijanisag program manager at Ain Dah Yung Center. “We had over 40,000 people participating, we were able to get so many different presenters from so many different communities, to support kids from everywhere.”

Over 20 different presenters from various tribes spoke at the event. They discussed the importance of culture including native language, artwork, and practices, and how connecting to culture supports prevention.

The event was such a success Ain Dah Yung Center plans to host another event in the spring. For more information on the event, contact Travis Decory at travis.decory@adycenter.org.
