The Cultural, Faith, and Disability Communities COVID-19 Update is being sent to the following three MDH mailing lists to reduce duplication:

  • MN Immigrant and Refugee Health Announcements
  • The Center for Health Equity

Today's COVID-19 updates include:

Status of COVID-19 in Minnesota

Updated Dec. 23, 2020

  • Total positive: 402,519
  • Patients who no longer need to be isolated: 379,512
  • Total approximate number of completed tests: 5,287,998
  • Deaths: 4,971
o Deaths among cases that resided in long-term care or assisted living facilities: 3,220
  • Total cases requiring hospitalization: 20,963
o Total hospitalized in ICU: 4,474

Numbers are cumulative since Jan. 20, 2020.

The number of lab-confirmed positive tests among Minnesota residents will be updated daily on Situation Update for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) with test results from the previous day. The page also includes a map of counties with confirmed cases, and more.

This total reflects only the results from laboratory testing. There are more cases in Minnesota, and the virus is circulating in communities. It is important for everyone to follow advice on community mitigation and social distancing to help us flatten the case curve.

Governor has launched a public dashboard which includes race data of cases: Minnesota COVID-19 Public Dashboard.

Updated Quarantine Guidance – Translated Materials

Minnesota has adopted CDC recommendations for shorter quarantines after potential exposure to COVID-19. It is still safest to wait 14 days to see if you contract the virus, but under certain conditions Minnesotans can end their quarantine in 7-10 days.

If you haven’t tested positive, have no symptoms, and continue to monitor for symptoms for 14 days, your quarantine can be shortened to 10 days. If you also test negative after 5 days, you can shorten your quarantine to 7 days. If your exposure is someone in your household and you’re a healthcare worker or have symptoms, you should still quarantine for the full 14 days.

The guidance for what to do after a positive test hasn’t changed: if you have symptoms, isolate until you feel better or it has been 10 days since you first felt sick and you haven’t had a fever for 24hrs. If you have no symptoms, stay home for at least 10 days after your test.

Other Updates

Governor Walz announcement for next steps on COVID-19

The Safe Learning Plan has been updated so that starting on Jan. 18, 2021, every elementary school across the state may choose to operate an in-person learning model if they are able to implement additional mitigation strategies.

Beginning on Dec. 19, the following changes will be implemented until Jan. 11:

  • Although indoor gatherings are strongly discouraged, Minnesotans can gather inside with one other household up to 10 people, and up to two households outside for up to 15 people. Masking and social distancing is strongly encouraged.
  • Gyms and fitness studios may open at 25 percent capacity, up to 100 people max, with masks and additional physical distancing. (Fitness classes remain closed until Jan. 4)
  • Outdoor entertainment venues are open at 25 percent capacity, up to 100 people.
  • Indoor entertainment venues, event spaces, and similar establishments remain closed.
    • Bars, restaurants, and breweries remain closed for indoor service.
    • Entertainment venues, event spaces, and similar establishments remain closed.

For bars and restaurants in which outdoor service is possible, there’s an opportunity to do business outside. For those businesses who chose, we are allowing 50 percent capacity or up to 100 people outside. This is by no means a solution for the industry as a whole; it’s just a recognition that the virus doesn’t spread nearly as fast outside and that this option would allow for some businesses to have an additional source of income in the time being.

Additionally, youth and adult sports, including fitness classes, will only be allowed to resume practices (no games or events) beginning Jan. 4, 2021.  Specific details and parameters around practices will be outlined in future guidance.

See Executive Order 20-103 for more information.
