Today's COVID-19 updates include:
Updated Dec. 9, 2020
- Total positive: 363,719
- Patients who no longer need to be isolated: 320,233
- Total approximate number of completed tests: 4,690,213
- Total deaths: 4,109
o Deaths among cases that resided in long-term care or assisted living facilities: 2,711
- Total cases requiring hospitalization: 18,809
o Total hospitalized in ICU: 4,106
Numbers are cumulative since Jan. 20, 2020.
The number of lab-confirmed positive tests among Minnesota residents will be updated daily on Situation Update for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) with test results from the previous day. The page also includes a map of counties with confirmed cases, and more.
This total reflects only the results from laboratory testing. There are more cases in Minnesota, and the virus is circulating in communities. It is important for everyone to follow advice on community mitigation and social distancing to help us flatten the case curve.
Governor has launched a public dashboard which includes race data of cases: Minnesota COVID-19 Public Dashboard.
COVID-19 Community Testing
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) works in partnership with communities to provide safe and free on-site COVID-19 testing in areas with outbreaks, increasing cases, or other barriers to access existing test sites.

Virtual & Outdoor Community Building
Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 1 p.m. Central time
The inability to convene in person due to COVID-19 continues to pose challenges for service providers, local government offices, and others who deliver community-based programs. These challenges require creative restructuring of our approaches. While daunting to imagine, some organizations have pivoted their programs to successfully build community between newcomers and longtime residents during these times.
This webinar will explore some of those creative solutions firsthand, and leave you with excitement for what your community-building programs could look like in 2021. Come ready to learn, ask questions, and brainstorm for the new year.

Updated Quarantine Guidance
For months, CDC had recommended a quarantine period of 14 days for people exposed to someone with COVID-19, also known as close contacts. Quarantine is one of several public health tools used to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 to others. This guidance was based on evidence showing that close contacts can develop a COVID-19 infection as many as 14 days after being exposed.
Last week, CDC announced an update to that long-standing guidance that includes options for 10-day or seven-day quarantines under certain conditions. After reviewing the available information, we updated our guidance to integrate these new recommendations.
The safest option is to stay away from others for 14 days.
- In certain situations, you may end your quarantine after 10 days, or after seven days with a negative COVID-19 test result.
- You cannot end your quarantine before seven days for any reason.
- Some work settings, like health care, have different rules about quarantine. Check with your employer.

We are working to update other areas of the website, documents, and other materials as quickly as possible.
COVID-19 Accessible Materials for People with Disabilities
The Georgia Tech Center for Inclusive Design and Innovation (CIDI), with funding from the CDC Foundation and technical assistance from CDC is adapting COVID-19 materials into accessible formats for people with disabilities. The project has created a microsite to house all of the materials which has now gone live. On the microsite, you can request embossed braille, download accessible Word Documents and PDFs, and register for upcoming webinars related to COVID-19 and people with disabilities. More accessible materials are coming soon.

Contract Tracing – Via Text
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is expanding its toolkit for case investigation and contact tracing (CICT) by notifying people via text that the Health Department will be calling.
The initiative aims to more effectively reach and inform those who test positive for COVID-19 and their close contacts about what they need to do to prevent further spread and to better protect the state’s most vulnerable populations through improved outreach and communication. The texting began Monday, November 16.
A text message will be sent to people identified as a case or the contact of a case to let them know that a case interviewer from state, local or tribal health departments will be calling to discuss their COVID-19 test results or potential exposure.
Case interviewers from MDH as well as local public health and tribal health not only gather valuable information from positive cases about the outbreak, but also provide connections to resources to help all Minnesotans reduce the risk of infection.
Combatting fears about calls from scammers pretending to be public health workers is another important part of the project. Getting a text message and knowing what number to expect a call from will help, but there are a few other things to know.
Case interviewers will talk to you about:
- Symptoms you may be experiencing.
- People you may have been in contact with.
- How to avoid getting other people sick.
Case interviewers will never ask for a Social Security Number, bank account information, or credit card numbers. Anyone with questions can visit the MDH website for more information on Avoiding Phone Scams. For more information on case investigation and contact tracing, see Tracing COVID-19.
