The Children & Nature Network is leading an international movement to connect children to nature to secure a healthy future for our children and the planet. An increasing body of research shows that regular connection nature is critical to children’s healthy development and supports overall health and wellbeing throughout the life-span. Nature-based activities can improve attention, reduce stress, increase physical activity, and promote social connectedness among other benefits. The Children & Nature Network is currently working in 21 cities and towns across the U.S., including both Minneapolis and St. Paul, to incorporate nature into city priorities, planning and policymaking. We are helping city leadership understand how the natural resources that exist in every community can be better integrated across a range of areas, including community health and wellness, education, out-of-school time programming, job creation, transportation, and climate resilience to support better outcomes for youth and families. For example, in St. Paul, we are supporting Nature-Smart Libraries as a strategy to use libraries as a jumping off point to connect families to parks and natural areas across the region. Learn about how your community can utilize the Children & Nature Network and implement a range of nature based strategies to promote mental wellbeing and community resilience.

April 22 & 23: Health and Human Rights Conference

Immigrants to the United States face many challenges, including trauma. The trauma can be a cause for their departure from their home country, but it can also occur during migration, or while in the United States. When immigrants seek an immigration status in the United States, they have a number of complex, legal steps to complete. Healthcare providers play a key role by providing medical and mental health assessments as well as documentation for applicants. This conference gives attendees the background and skills needed to complete these assessments.

The first day, attendees will learn about basic circumstances immigrants face in their quest for legal status in the U.S. and the impact it has upon their wellbeing. Social and regulatory aspects will be discussed, including information specific to immigrants in Minnesota. Experts in medical conditions and legal processes will give attendees a fundamental understanding of trauma and the current immigration system. On the second day, attendees will learn the skills needed to conduct culturally competent assessments, including specific training on medical or mental health and documentation requirements. Attendees will then learn how these assessments are used within an adversarial immigration court setting.
