Professional Field Exchanges: Stewardship in Action

Professional Antibiotic Stewardship Field Exchanges provide MOHASC members with opportunities to see how antibiotics are used, and how stewardship is practiced, in human, animal, and environmental health settings.

On October 30, MOHASC members were hosted by the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine to learn about antibiotic use and stewardship in small animal medicine. The Saint Paul event included a presentation and a tour of the Veterinary Medical Center. Discussion identified unique and shared barriers and opportunities across veterinary and human stewardship.

On December 10, MOHASC members were hosted by Walker Methodist Health Center in Minneapolis to learn about antibiotic use and stewardship in long-term care. Discussion highlighted unique challenges faced by nursing homes when ensuring that residents receive antibiotics only when needed.

Antimicrobial Resistance and Stewardship Initiative (ARSI) Launched by University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM)

The Antimicrobial Resistance and Stewardship Initiative (ARSI) website is home to antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection prevention resources and tools for the veterinary profession.

New resources for small animal stewardship have been posted, including a Pocket Guide: Antimicrobial Prescribing for Common Small Animal Diseases (PDF) containing first-line antimicrobial recommendations for common canine and feline conditions and Antibiotic Use Talking Points for Vet Clinics (PDF).

Stay tuned for a new resource to help small animal clinics successfully implement antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.

International Dental Federation Adopts Antibiotic Stewardship Policy Statement

  • The policy “highlights the crucial role that dentists, their teams, and National Dental Associations… have in proactive engagement in antibiotic stewardship to ensure appropriate use of antibiotics.”
  • The policy statement references the need for a One Health approach, through which all sectors work for improvement.
  • Read the policy at International Dental Journal: Antibiotic Stewardship in Dentistry.

Electronic Health Records to Assess Prescribing for Canine Acute Diarrhea

  • The Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network (SAVSNET) program at University of Liverpool collects data from small animal primary care practices in an effort to understand more about veterinary disease and practice.
  • Although canine acute diarrhea is a common presenting complaint, the varied approaches to patient care, including dietary modification and antimicrobial use, have not been comprehensively described.
  • In this 2019 publication, researchers report that systemic antimicrobials were the most commonly prescribed pharmaceutical agents for acute canine diarrhea, and are estimated to be used for 49.7% (95% CI 46.1–53.2) of cases.
  • Although there are currently no guidelines from the International Society for Companion Animal Infectious Diseases, there is growing evidence that antibiotics might not be indicated in most situations. More research, as well as consensus among veterinary internal medicine and infectious disease experts, will be welcome as veterinarians strive to put stewardship interventions into practice.

C. 937,443 pounds (468.72 tons) of medications were collected at the 17th annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day in April 2019. These events help people safely dispose of unwanted, unneeded, and expired prescription drugs like antibiotics and opioids at a convenient location. Proper disposal helps prevent substance misuse and contamination of our lakes and rivers. You can dispose of medications properly year-round by finding a location at Minnesota Pollution Control Agency: Dispose of Unwanted Medications.

For the trivia buffs out there, since the inception of National Drug Take Back Day, 11,816,393 pounds have been collected, of which 184,870 pounds were from Minnesotans.
