SHIP planning update

SHIP

New workgroups to convene

The following message from Kris Igo was sent out to SHIP staff and local public health directors earlier this week.

“During our planning process for the next five years of SHIP, many local leaders, staff, directors and statewide partners have stepped up to volunteer their time.

Starting this month, some of these workgroups will wrap up and pass along their recommendations to our next round of workgroups: Equity & Engagement, Evaluation, Capacity Building (TA & Training), Communications, and Funding/Scope of Work.

These teams will take the baton and continue to develop a plan for how we will operationalize the SHIP work, with a focus on capacity, equity and statewide collective action. You are encouraged to reach out to them to share your thoughts and learn more about the process.”

Local advocates take strides to make Wabasha a Bike Friendly Community

A Wabasha Bike/Walk advocates group that first started meeting in 2018 is taking steps to make its vision for the community become a reality.

The group formed during a Bicycle Friendly Community Rapid Planning Workshop, where participants identified short-, medium- and long-term goals. The group’s first action planning focused on establishing a bike-share program.

The group, which includes city officials, local merchants and citizens, met for about a year to find a way to provide bicycles for visitors and residents who do not have a bike but want to explore the community and be active.

The planning came to fruition when Wabasha launched its community bike-share program on June 14, 2019. The community celebrated with a kick-off celebration at Heritage Park, with live music and activities that encouraged the use of the bike-share program.

Local organizers and advocates had set a target of 120 registered users in the first year. That goal was quickly surpassed, with 146 registered users signing up in just the first two months since the bike-share program opened.

Wabasha is a popular Mississippi River town and has nine biking trails nearby. The community recently completed a master trail plan, created an interactive map that highlights opportunities to be active, published the Biking Guide to Wabasha (PDF), and added markings to 1-, 3- and 5-miles bike/walk routes. Wabasha County SHIP has provided technical assistance and funding support for the community’s active living efforts.

“With the many local offerings, it's a no brainer to support the Bike/Walk advocates initiatives,” said Wabasha Mayor Emily Durand. “SHIP has been a tremendous partner in seeing to it that we develop and use our active living assets.”
