MOHASC members receive grant funding for companion animal disease surveillance

Collaborative members from University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine received funding to establish and pilot a passive surveillance system for companion animal disease and treatment, including antimicrobial use.

Companion Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network Minnesota (CAVSNET-MN) is modeled after the University of Liverpool: Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network, which uses near real-time clinical data to define trends in animal disease and veterinary practice across the U.K.

The UMN research team will also conduct a pilot point prevalence study of antibiotic use and resistance in Minnesota small animal and equine medicine.

News to Note

CID publication describes antibiotic prescribing in outpatient cancer center

A new article in Clinical Infectious Diseases (CID) describes prescribing for adult upper respiratory tract infections (URI) in an outpatient cancer center.

  • Nearly one third of patients presenting with URI received an antibiotic, which is similar to other outpatient settings.
  • Follow-up visits for URI were not significantly different for patients prescribed and not prescribed antibiotics at the initial encounter.
  • URI viral testing was associated with a lower likelihood of antibiotic prescription.

New publications highlight antibiotic stewardship in dentistry

Dentists prescribe 10% of antibiotics in the outpatient setting and are an important partner in antibiotic stewardship.

The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry saw a 73% decrease in antibiotic prescribing in the dental urgent care setting after assessing practices and implementing stewardship interventions.

D. 80%

Studies show that 80% of farm workers in animal agriculture have experienced a needlestick injury. Accidental needlesticks can be serious and might require medical attention. Farmers, ranchers, veterinarians, and onsite workers are susceptible to needlesticks on the job, including needles contaminated with antibiotics and vaccines.

Find resources on needlestick prevention at UMASH, Needlestick Prevention, UMASH, Best Practices for Veterinary Sharps, and MDH, Injection Safety.
