Professional Field Exchange: MN Public Health Laboratory welcomed MOHASC to learn about antibiotic susceptibility testing and surveillance

  • On Sept. 14, fourteen members of the Minnesota One Health Antibiotic Stewardship Collaborative from healthcare, public health, environmental health, and veterinary medicine visited the Minnesota Public Health Laboratory.
  • The visit included a tour of the infectious disease laboratory and discussions on the differences between a clinical lab and public health lab, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and sophisticated testing methods conducted at this hub of the Antibiotic Resistance Laboratory Network.
  • Thank you to the Public Health Lab staff for a great cross-disciplinary discussion of antibiotic resistance!

More Minnesota Hospitals Reporting Antimicrobial Use to National System

  • This year, several Minnesota hospitals have begun tracking and reporting antibiotic use data using the Antimicrobial Use and Resistance Module, a component of the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) system.
  • We applaud the efforts of Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater and Sanford Bemidji Medical Center, Minnesota's most recent adopters.
  • In addition to promoting the safety of their own patients, hospitals reporting their antimicrobial use are making a contribution to public health efforts.
  • NHSN data on antibiotic use will be used to track national and state-specific trends in hospital antibiotic use.
  • If you are interested in learning more about NHSN antibiotic use reporting, including to explore use within your hospital, please contact us at health.stewardship@state.mn.us.

NHSN Antimicrobial Use and Resistance Module Webinar Recording Now Available Online

  • On May 8, 2018, Minnesota Department of Health hosted a webinar on the CDC National Healthcare Safety Network Antimicrobial Use and Resistance (AUR) Module.
  • Hear speakers from CDC’s Division of Healthcare Quality and Promotion and professionals from two hospitals using the module to track antimicrobial use.

Multidrug-resistant Campylobacter Outbreak Linked to Puppy Exposure

  • 118 people across 18 states were identified with Campylobacter jejuni after exposure to puppies from a national pet store chain.
  • 95% of puppies received one of more courses of antibiotics, raising concern that antibiotic use might have led to development of resistance.
  • This outbreak highlights that puppies can be a source of multidrug-resistant Campylobacter infections in humans, emphasizing the necessity for judicious antibiotic use across human and veterinary medicine.

Answer: c. First antibiotic discovered (penicillin)

Sept. 28, 2018, marked the 90th anniversary of Alexander Fleming’s discovery of the first antibiotic, penicillin, in 1928. Today, it is now recognized as National Penicillin Allergy Day to increase knowledge about penicillin allergies and benefits of allergy testing. In the United States, 10% of people report a penicillin allergy, but less than 1% of the population is truly allergic. It is important to correctly identify those with and without a penicillin allergy. This will provide more patients access to safer, less toxic antibiotics and will help in the fight to combat antibiotic-resistant infections.

A 2018 American Family Physician article addresses common questions about penicillin allergy testing.

Download or order free print materials from the National Penicillin Allergy Day campaign and show your commitment to raising awareness of penicillin allergies within your health system and community!

For the trivia lovers out there, the smallpox vaccine was introduced in 1796, insulin was first used in a diabetic person in 1922, the structure of the DNA molecule was described in 1953, and Dolly the Sheep was cloned in 1996.

In addition to September 28th being National Penicillin Allergy Day, it was also World Rabies Day to help raise awareness about rabies and bring together partners to enhance prevention and control efforts worldwide. Remember to vaccinate your pets!
