Show your Commitment to Antibiotic Stewardship!

Image of poster: Keep Calm and Prescribe Antibiotics Appropriately

Do you work in a health care facility that prescribes antibiotics? Are you interested in making a public commitment to antibiotic stewardship and letting your patients know that antibiotics are not always the answer? MDH has revamped the Minnesota Antibiotic Stewardship Commitment Toolkit. In the toolkit, you will find customizable stewardship commitment posters that can be used across the continuum of care. All posters can be customized with your clinic logo, prescriber names and photos, or even patient photos to show your dedication to responsible antibiotic use.

Demonstrate your commitment to prescribing antibiotics only for bacterial infections and to combatting the growing problem of antibiotic resistance. Whether you choose to display one or more of these posters in your examination rooms, waiting rooms, or elevators, they will exhibit your commitment to antibiotic stewardship. Pledge to use antibiotics appropriately by customizing your commitment poster today!

National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) User Group for Hospitals

  • The Hospital NHSN User Group provides a venue for discussion of NHSN use within acute care and critical access hospitals.
  • The call is facilitated by CHAIN partners, which include the Minnesota Hospital Association, Stratis Health, the Minnesota Department of Health, and the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology – Minnesota chapter.
  • Each call features educational content, important updates about NHSN reporting, and HAI case studies. Last month's call featured a Minnesota hospital sharing about their experience implementing the Epic ICON module.
  • Hospital NHSN user group calls are held on a bimonthly basis on the third Thursday of the month from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.

One & Only Injection Safety Training for Staff

Are you considering planning a competency-based injection safety program for staff? There are resources available to you to build your training program!

Competency-based training includes direct observation of heath care personnel during the performance of their duties. The One & Only Campaign has created a checklist for use in this assessment: Injection Safety Checklist (PDF)

NHSN's Long-term Care Facility Component Annual Training

The National Healthcare Safety Network's (NHSN) 2018 Long-term Care Facility Annual Training will be July 16 - 18, 2018 at the CDC in Atlanta.

All three days will be dedicated to infection prevention and surveillance in the long-term care facility setting. Speakers will discuss a variety of topics including antibiotic stewardship, prevention and surveillance for urinary tract infection (UTI), Clostridium difficile, multi-drug resistant organisms, and more. Users will also have the opportunity to participate in hands-on NHSN navigation and analysis training.

Watch for more information: NHSN LTC Newsletters

If you are contemplating enrollment in NHSN and surveillance for UTI and C. difficile, contact the MDH Healthcare-Associated Infections Unit for help getting started before the July training: 651-201-5414 or Health.HAI@state.mn.us.

Infection Prevention and Control Programs Essential to Antibiotic Stewardship Efforts

With treatment costs for antibiotic-resistant infections estimated at $2 billion annually, three leading infection control organizations call on health care leaders to prioritize infection prevention and control and antibiotic stewardship programs as essential components of patient safety.

Antibiotic Stewardship and Treatment for Sinus Infections

A key antibiotic stewardship principle is to use the shortest effective length of antibiotic treatment recommended by guidelines. A new study in The Journal of the American Medical Association shows almost 70% of antibiotics prescribed by primary care physicians for sinus infections are for 10 days, which is longer than the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) recommendation of 5-7 days.

CHAIN Award for Excellence

The Minnesota Collaborative Healthcare-Associated Infection Network (CHAIN) Award for Excellence commends the infection prevention and antibiotic stewardship efforts of health care teams working to build safer health care environments. The awards are presented annually by CHAIN. We had many great initiatives submitted and we will be featuring a brief summary of each nomination in the coming months. This month we are featuring the Antibiotic Stewardship Committee for Sanford Medical Center, Thief River Falls. We hope the lessons learned will provide you with innovative ideas that are useful to you regarding patient safety and quality of care.

The Antibiotic Stewardship Committee implemented strategies from the CDC Core Elements of Antibiotic Stewardship. As the majority of their antibiotic use is driven by urinary tract infections (UTIs) and viral infections, the team targeted this area by implementing criteria to distinguish between asymptomatic and symptomatic bacteriuria, avoiding antibiotics for asymptomatic bacteriuria, and educating providers on the importance of not using antibiotics for common colds. Collaboration with local skilled nursing and assisted living facilities helped to incorporate best practices in the evaluation and treatment of UTIs as well as staff and family member education. The team also created “care packages” consisting of items to provide symptom comfort and information on why the provider has not prescribed an antibiotic. 150 care packages were provided in the past year.

What is CHAIN?

CHAIN represents a partnership formed in 2011 between the Minnesota Chapter of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC-Minnesota), the Minnesota Department of Health, the Minnesota Hospital Association, and Stratis Health. In early 2017, CHAIN expanded membership to include organizations representing providers across care settings.

CHAIN coordinates across the continuum of health care delivery, and supports patients, individuals, and their families to prevent harm from infections acquired in the process of care and combat antibiotic resistance.
