New FDA Tool to Improve Antibiotic Use

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced a new website that will streamline how the FDA provides updates regarding new antibiotic susceptibility test interpretive criteria or "breakpoints." Historically, these breakpoints were determined on a case-by-case basis for each manufacturer. As part of the 21st Century Cures Act, FDA will update breakpoints for multiple drugs having the same active ingredient simultaneously and will post them on the FDA webpage in order to give providers access to the most up-to-date information as they determine the most effective antibiotics to use for their patients.

Free! On-line Training Program Offered by SHEA/CDC on Outbreak Response

ORTP Training Program Header

The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have teamed up to develop the Outbreak Response Training Program (ORTP). ORTP has released two online decision-making simulation modules: Hospital Incident Command Systems: How to Lead When a Crisis Occurs and Defending Against Superbugs: An Interactive Case Study Managing an "Outbreak" of Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) in a Hospital Setting. Both modules take about one-half hour, provide key resources, and can help improve decision-making skills.

Phase Four of the National Action Plan for HAI Prevention

The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and the Federal Steering Committee for the Prevention of HAIs submitted a proposal for Phase Four of the National Action Plan for the Elimination of Healthcare-Associated Infections to the Federal Register. Phase Four is titled "Coordination Among Federal Partners to Leverage HAI Prevention and Antibiotic Stewardship." As the title suggests, Phase Four focuses on optimizing antibiotic use and aligns closely with the National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria. The comment period closed in December; however, if you are curious about the future direction of HAI and antibiotic resistance prevention at the national-level, you will want to check this out!

    CHAIN Award for Excellence

The Minnesota Collaborative Healthcare-Associated Infection Network (CHAIN) Award for Excellence commends the infection prevention and antibiotic stewardship efforts of healthcare teams working to build safer healthcare environments. The awards are presented annually by the Collaborative Healthcare-Associated Infection Network (CHAIN). We received an abundance of nominations this year, and will be featuring a brief summary of each nomination in the coming months. This month we are featuring Augustana Health Care Center of Minneapolis. We hope the lessons learned will provide you with innovative ideas that are useful to you regarding patient safety and quality of care.

    Antibiotic Stewardship Committee

Augustana's antibiotic stewardship committee developed and presented mandatory "train-the-trainer" sessions on antibiotic stewardship. An online learning session for nursing assistants was also created to broaden knowledge of antibiotic stewardship practices. A surveillance tool was developed to ensure antibiotic use was appropriate and was monitored by clinicians to ensure best practice. Data from this form are correlated to resident census days, type, and onset of the infection, with monthly and quarterly tabulation to monitor trends, improvements, and areas of concern.

    What is CHAIN?

The Collaborative Healthcare-Associated Infections Network (CHAIN) represents a partnership formed in 2011 between the Minnesota Chapter of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC-Minnesota), the Minnesota Department of Health, the Minnesota Hospital Association, and Stratis Health. In early 2017, CHAIN expanded membership to include organizations representing providers across care settings. CHAIN coordinates across the continuum of health care delivery, and supports patients, individuals, and their families to prevent harm from infections acquired in the process of care and combat antibiotic resistance.
