Stewardship quiz? You betcha! (scroll down for answer)

A new report has been published reviewing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) findings from retail meat in the United States during 2010-2011. Data were collected within the framework of the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS). Of the 3520 retail meats collected from 8 U.S. states, how many were found to contain S. aureus and were positive for MRSA?

a. 95 (2.7%) contained S. aureus and 52 (1.5%) positive for MRSA
b. 982 (27.9%) contained S. aureus and 66 (1.9%) positive for MRSA
c. 1290 (36.6%) contained S. aureus and 113 (3.2%) positive for MRSA

Gap Analysis Template for Acute Care Facilities Posted

We have posted a gap analysis template that can be used by acute care hospitals for antibiotic stewardship program assessment. The template is structured based on the Joint Commission standard for antibiotic stewardship, effective on January 1, 2017. Find the template on the Human Health Resources Page, under the "Inpatient Facilities" heading. http://www.health.state.mn.us/onehealthabx/human.html

Honor Roll for Acute Care Antibiotic Stewardship Programs Coming Soon!

The structure of the Minnesota Honor Roll for Acute Care Antibiotic Stewardship has been developed by the Minnesota One Health Antibiotic Stewardship Collaborative and statewide partners, including Minnesota Department of Health, Stratis Health, and Minnesota Hospital Association. Details and materials for application will be available by early May on the One Health Antibiotic Stewardship website and by email communication from state stewardship partners. Stay tuned! Planning for the Minnesota Honor Roll for Long-term Care Antibiotic Stewardship is also underway.

Quiz Answer!

Correct Answer: b. 982 (27.9%) contained S. aureus and 66 (1.9%) positive for MRSA

Consistent with other US surveys, authors of the paper published in Food Microbiology report a low prevalence of MRSA organisms with diverse lineages. They explain that low MRSA prevalence in retail meats have been documented in countries with both high and low rates of human MRSA infection. This suggests that retail meat findings do not correlate with clinical infection on a population level. Most frequently identified in 2010-2011 was the USA300 MRSA clone, which is the predominant community-associated MRSA epidemic clone currently circulating in the US. The USA300 clone was obtained from all four types of meat studied: turkey, chicken, pork, and beef.

Sources of meat contamination with MRSA include from the pork itself or from contamination by human handling, including processing and repackaging activities. Other studies show that controls in place throughout the pork processing chain successfully decrease MRSA prevalence from pig nose to pig meat.
