Safe Routes to School in
Small Rural Communities: Challenges and Strategies to Accessing Funding
Time: Noon–1
p.m.
Date: Sept. 20
Many children grow up walking and bicycling to school in rural communities
across the country and Safe Routes to School initiatives are making it safer
and easier for them to do so. However, small rural communities often have
particular considerations when it comes to accessing funding and implementing
Safe Routes to School and active transportation projects.
This webinar provides an overview of the needs for and benefits of Safe Routes
to School in rural areas; explores the challenges that may arise; and describes
ways state departments of transportation support these communities in their
efforts to use key Federal funding for active transportation projects. Speakers
will highlight small rural communities where federal funding has been
successfully used to improve safety and accessibility for walking and
bicycling.

Partnership Helps Rochester School Score Big Healthy Eating and Active Living Victories
In football terms, it's first down and goal for Longfellow Choice Elementary School in Rochester.
The school has its health objectives within reach thanks to a partnership with the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) and Fuel Up to Play 60 (FUTP60). FUTP60 is a joint venture between the National Football League, the United States Department of Agriculture and the National Dairy Council. The effort encourages youth to eat healthier foods and achieve at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.

Grantees have been selected by the Center for
Health Equity (CHE) to help the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) in its
goal to advance health equity for all Minnesotans.
Two grant Requests for Proposals (RFP) have been issued by CHE: advancing health equity and eliminating health disparities. The RFP process, from inception to grantee selection,
was a team effort supported by numerous community partners and throughout MDH,
particularly by Will Wilson, supervisor of the Primary Care Financial and
Technical Assistance Unit, Office of Rural Health and Primary Care; Jeannette
L. Raymond, Community Engagement Unit supervisor, Public Health Practice
Section, Health Partnerships Division; and Megan Waltz, Prenatal to Three
Policy and Systems advisor.
Grant dollars to advance health equity are for addressing
measurable health inequities and identifying the social and economic conditions
that contribute to the inequities, and for developing plans to address and
improve these conditions. Two organizations have been selected for these
grants: How many applicants were there, and how much grant money has been
awarded?
- Neighborhood Hub will center on health inequities
related to housing, employment and community health support in three North
Minneapolis neighborhoods.
- Voices for Racial Justice will focus on the
intersection of incarceration and health in three greater Minnesota
prisons.
Grant dollars to eliminate health disparities are for funding
community initiatives that support improving the health status of people of
color and American Indians in eight priority health areas. CHE has named 32 grantees to share a pot of
$5.142 million that was received from the legislature and from federal
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funds. Information about the 32
grantees will be posted soon to the Center for Health Equity website. CHE received 111 applications asking for more
than $17.5 million.

The 2016 TCN Policy Recommendations are available!
The Tobacco Control Network (TCN) recently
released the 2016 TCN Policy Recommendations document. The document
reflects the Network’s priorities – it declares a vision and direction for
policy and system changes, which TCN membership believe are most important to
reducing and eliminating health issues caused by tobacco use and secondhand
smoke exposure. The Tobacco Control Network is comprised of the tobacco control
program managers, staff from each U.S. state and territorial health agency, and
the District of Columbia.
Building on the previous policy document, the 2016 TCN Policy Recommendations
aim to prepare membership to meet the evolving demands of the tobacco control
landscape and to help shape effective tobacco control programs. State and
territorial tobacco control programs found the 2012 version helpful in
providing program direction, completing readiness assessments, developing their
five-year National State-Based Tobacco Control work plans, and educating their
state’s leadership about evidence-based tobacco control work.
Inspiring Bold Action: The Minnesota Tobacco
Control Conference
Date: Jan. 24-26, 2017
Location: RiverCentre, 175 Kellogg Blvd. W., Saint Paul, MN 55102 Cost: $100
The conference will focus on three primary areas:
- Eliminating tobacco inequities: Disparities
in commercial tobacco use are very clear and use remains persistently high in
groups such as communities of color; indigenous communities; LGBT; urban and
rural populations; certain occupations; those with mental health or substance
use disorders; the homeless; and those with lower levels of income or
educational attainment.
- Taking bold steps through policy change that can
help to eliminate these inequities.
- Fulfilling the need for sustainable resources to
support the elimination of inequities. This includes engaging community
members, building community capacity, and developing community leadership. It
also is designed to secure funding sources that are targeted toward the
implementation of community driven solutions.
Watch for more information and registration details this fall.
