Update from Your Minnesota Stewardship Collaborative
Director of One Health Antibiotic Stewardship has arrived
Amanda Beaudoin, DVM, PhD, DACVPM has joined Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) as Director of One Health Antibiotic Stewardship. She will work with all collaborators of the One Health Antibiotic Stewardship Agenda to move the existing strategic plan and other Minnesota antibiotic resistance activities forward over the coming years.
Amanda comes to MDH from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where she worked in the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion’s International Infection Control Program. She has worked in both equine and small animal clinical practice and conducted research on influenza in swine, poultry, and human populations. While working for CDC, Amanda was active in many facets of human public health practice, including outbreak investigation and response to foodborne, zoonotic, and health care-associated infections, providing infection prevention and control support to health care facilities across the continuum of care, and assisting foreign governments to establish national surveillance systems for antibiotic resistant organisms. Reach Amanda and the One Health Antibiotic Stewardship Collaborative at health.stewardship@state.mn.us.

Quiz Answer!
Correct Answer: e. All of the above
a. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a final ruling that requires all antibiotics administered to animals in feed and water for prevention or treatment of disease to be used under veterinary oversight and a veterinary feed directive (VFD). VFD is a written order (essentially, a prescription) that is issued by a licensed veterinarian with an established veterinary-client-patient relationship (where the client is a producer, owner, etc.). The VFD authorizes the client to obtain and use the antibiotic as directed in or on feed. Antibiotics prescribed by VFD must only be used as labeled by FDA. Takes effect January 1, 2017. Read more
b. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed ruling that would require a hospital to develop and maintain an antibiotic stewardship program as an effective means to improve hospital antibiotic-prescribing practices and curb patient risk for Clostridium difficile and antibiotic-resistant infections. Read more
c. CMS has proposed a ruling that would require long-term care facilities to ensure that an antibiotic stewardship program is maintained within the infection prevention and control program. The stewardship program must incorporate protocols for the use of antibiotics and tracking of antibiotic use. The proposed ruling also includes requirements for review of resident medical records by a pharmacist, which could have an additional positive impact on antibiotic stewardship. Read more
d. The Joint Commission has approved a Medical Management standard that requires hospitals, critical access hospitals, and nursing care centers to have an antimicrobial stewardship program based on current scientific literature. Takes effect January 1, 2017. Read more
