Bicycle Alliance
of MN still has openings for their upcoming LCI - League Cycling Instructor
class in St. Paul.
http://www.bikemn.org/events/event/333
This class is
great to encourage Active Living community partners (bike clubs, coalitions,
local advocates, etc.) to get certified for both liability coverage and also
having a well-rounded curriculum and knowledge base to teach from. An LCI
can teach a 1 hour course, 9 hour course, or lead events and have liability
coverage under the League of American Bicyclist. A very helpful partner
for conducting work in the Education and Encouragement areas of the 6 E's of
creating bicycle friendly communities.
More information
on LCI's can be found at http://www.bikemn.org/events/event/333 or reaching out to Kelly.corbin@state.mn.us

In celebration of Breastfeeding Month (which
is August), the Minnesota Department of Health is
starting a program that recognizes family child care homes and child care
centers that have taken steps to become breastfeeding friendly. Child care
providers can play a critical role in supporting breastfeeding mothers and
their babies and it is important to recognize their successes and efforts to
support breastfeeding mothers.
Please provide this link to your child care partners who have
been implementing best practices and policies that support breastfeeding in
their programs: http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/oshii/bf/bf-childcare.html. This link provides steps for homes and
centers, and guidance that will help satisfy the steps and applications needed
for recognition.
SHIP partners have exclusive access to this site now. Child care
providers will be able to use the site later this month.
For more information about
the recognition program or the application process, go to: health.bfcc@state.mn.us.

The
Tobacco Control Legal Consortium has updated the Lawsuits
Challenging the FDA’s Deeming Rule. This resource gives a brief overview
of recent lawsuits filed challenging the FDA’s deeming rule as of August 8.
Since
the end of the 20th century, the U.S. has seen a large increase in smoke-free
and tobacco-free environments, including public places, workplaces, multi-unit
apartment buildings and affordable housing. State and local tobacco control
laws often exempt residential care settings, including assisted living, adult
foster care, nursing homes and similar environments, where many of the most
vulnerable members of society live and where a disproportionate number of
residents (and staff) either use tobacco products or are exposed to secondhand
smoke.
This collection of resources presents the legal landscape of state regulations and
provides the public health rationale for reducing tobacco use and secondhand
smoke exposure in assisted living and similar residential care
settings. These materials were prepared as part of a research grant
(RC-2014-0017), funded by ClearWay Minnesota.
Clearing the Clouds: Demystifying the Vape Shop
Time: 2
p.m.
Date:
Sept. 13
Central Vape
shops, or retail stores that specialize in e-cigarettes and related products,
seem to be popping up everywhere. Although the total number of vape shops
in the United States is unknown due to a current lack of regulatory and
licensing policies, estimates range anywhere from 3,500 to 35,000 and this
number is growing. In this Consortium webinar, presenters will provide a
summary of the most recent literature published on vape shops, discuss policy
options for regulating them in light of the FDA’s new deeming rule, describe a
new tool for conducting observational store assessments, and share a local case
study.
Presenters are Kurt Ribisl, professor, University of North Carolina’s Gillings
School of Global Public Health; and Desmond Jenson, staff attorney,
Tobacco Control Legal Consortium. The moderator is Mean Meany, staff attorney,
Tobacco Control Legal Consortium.
Register here.
The Tobacco Control Legal Consortium has posted the recording and slides
from the webinar, News from
the Front: State and Local Regulation of E-Cigarettes – Legislation and
Advocacy (July 26, 2016).
