  • New Funding Opportunity | The Center for Prevention's Healthy Eating Success Stories | Application Deadline Aug. 8

The Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota delivers on Blue Cross' long-term commitment to improve the health of all Minnesotans by tackling the leading root causes of preventable disease: tobacco use, lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating. Funded through proceeds from Blue Cross' historic lawsuit against the tobacco industry, they collaborate with organizations statewide to increase health equity, transform communities and create a healthier state.

The Center is pleased to announce a new funding opportunity for its Healthy Eating Success Stories funding initiative. Awards of up to $10,000 per initiative will be available to six to eight organizations that want to showcase their successful healthy eating work. Many successful and innovative projects and initiatives have been implemented that address barriers to eating healthy throughout Minnesota. However, due to various constraints such as organizational size or staff capacity, there are often fewer resources available to promote such successes.

This funding aims to highlight the outcomes and lessons of current or completed healthy eating programs, and to promote them within communities that may be inspired to duplicate the successes.

They seek to fund organizations that want to share success stories about their healthy eating projects in unique and innovative ways that also align with the foundational work laid out in the Minnesota Food Charter. The Success Stories project will use persuasive, tailored communications and powerful personal narratives to execute campaign(s) that will deliver positive community-based healthy eating messages.  Application deadline is 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8 (Central Time). To apply for this funding opportunity and review the required materials, visit the Available Funding page.

State agencies seek public feedback on Minnesota Walks

The Minnesota Departments of Transportation and Health are seeking feedback on Minnesota Walks, a statewide guide for creating safe, desirable and convenient places to walk and roll where Minnesotans live, work, learn and play.

Minnesota Walks is Minnesota’s first comprehensive statewide effort to address pedestrian needs and challenges. When completed, it will guide transportation and pedestrian planning, decision making and collaboration for agencies, organizations, policymakers, and public and private entities across the state. The goal of the work is to make walking safe, convenient and desirable for everyone in Minnesota.

The public can make comments on the project website at www.minnesotawalks.org or by sending an email to health.activeliving@state.mn.us. In addition, the public is encouraged to join the conversation on Facebook (follow @mndot) or on Twitter (use hashtag #mnwalks).

Tell Your Story | Minnesota Food Charter Network

Minnesota Department of Health logo

The Minnesota Food Charter Network is gathering compelling stories from leaders just like you from across Minnesota; stories that demonstrate powerful progress in creating healthier food environments, strengthening food skills and building a healthy food infrastructure.

These stories reflect wonderful work across the food supply - from seed to table - oftentimes embodying one or more of the 99 Food Charter strategies.

The goal of this project is to connect people who are doing wonderful work to improve our food supply across Minnesota; to provide information about the connections between these efforts and the potential policies that could play a supportive role; and to inspire progress by sharing these stories with others.

SHIP Tobacco Announcement

Minnesota Department of Health logo

As you know, Year Two DRAFT work plan and budgets are due by Aug. 31. I would highly encourage you to work with our tobacco technical assistance (TA) providers to develop these initial drafts before sending them to MDH for review. Both TA providers are aware of the MDH requirements and approaches to smoke-free housing and point of sale. They have worked on the ground, all over the state, for years. They are also very in tune with how your work is connected to overall tobacco prevention and control in Minnesota and can provide excellent guidance as you are planning your activities.

If you have not been working with one of the TA providers, below is a list of the contacts who can provide with the names of TA providers who are available in your region, which are very flexible and based on your individual preferences and needs. Please reach out to the provider you’ve been working with and with whom you feel is the most appropriate person to help you with your unique needs. The contacts are:

Northwest, Northcentral, and Northeast: Pat McKone pat.mckone@lung.org (218) 726-4721

Westcentral, Central, and Metro: Esha Seth esha@ansrmn.org (651) 646-3005

Southwest, Southcentral, and Southeast: Erin Simmons erin.simmons@lung.org (507) 382-7421

Questions for MDH? Contact Cassandra Stepan cassandra.stepan@state.mn.us (651) 201-3665 and your community specialist.
