USDA Summer Meals Program Provides Nutritious, Free Meals Across Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) is supporting 185 schools and community organizations providing meals and snacks at over 800 meal sites across Minnesota this summer through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) also known as the Sun Meals program.
For families who depend on school meals to nourish their children during the school year, Sun Meals helps close the nutrition gap over the summer. The program provides access to healthy meals to allow students to return to school in fall ready to learn, supporting academic achievement.
“These meals and snacks provide kids access to nutritious meals during the summer months when they don't have access to food through the Free School Meals for Kids Program,” said Education Commissioner Willie Jett. “Sun Meals sites are available throughout Minnesota to help families meet their kids' basic needs, so that every child has an opportunity to thrive.”
Sun Meals is a federal nutrition program funded by the USDA and administered by MDE. The program provides food to children ages 18 and under or those over 18 with mental or physical disabilities who participate in school programs. Most sites can offer up to two meals per child per day between breakfast, lunch, snack, and supper.
