Trade and Industry Update: Spring 2025

Important Dates

  • April 4-5, 2025: SkillsUSA Minnesota State Leadership and Skills Championship Conference – The SkillsUSA Minnesota State Championships takes place in April every year and brings together outstanding Career and Technical Education (CTE) students who compete hands-on in 80-plus different trade, technical and leadership fields. This year’s conference will be at Wayzata High School and other Twin Cities metro region host sites.
  • April 9-10, 2025: 2MTEC Conference – The Minnesota Manufactured Technical Education Conference (2MTEC) is a professional development conference. See the 2MTEC Conference story below for more details.
  • April 11-12, 2025: MN+CS Conference – This free conference will bring together over 100 educators from across Minnesota to develop their knowledge and confidence in teaching computer science. MN+CS is a collaborative effort between the Raspberry Pi Foundation and the Minnesota chapter of the Computer Science Teachers Association. This conference by and for teachers aims to support the delivery of high-quality computer science education to all Minnesota students.   • April 15, 2025: Deadline for Women in Trucking Foundation Scholarships – The Women In Trucking (WIT) Foundation awards scholarships via two cycles annually, in spring and fall. The WIT Foundation is accepting applications for the Spring 2025 scholarship cycle March 1 through Sunday, April 15.

  • April 25, 2025: Engineering Machine Design Contest – The Engineering Machine Design Contest is a low-cost opportunity for teams of students from grades 5-12 to design and build a complex machine using everyday objects – similar to a Rube Goldberg.

  • April 26, 2025: Drone Safety Day – The National Center for Autonomous Technologies (NCAT) has a list of events, resources, and Drone Day information. 

  • April 30, 2025: Southeast Minnesota Welding Competition – The Southeast Minnesota Welding Competition is available to high school students in southeast Minnesota. Check out the welding competition story below.

  • April 30, 2025: Association of Women Contractors (AWC) Scholarships – The AWC supports three different scholarship types available for female students in construction. All applications are due by April 30, 2025. For more information and to download the applications go to the AWC website.

  • May 1-2, 2025: Minnesota Construction Teachers Conference – Project Build Minnesota, Minnesota/North Dakota Associated Builders and Contractors, and the Electrical Association will be hosting a two-day professional development event for Minnesota construction teachers in Eagan, Minnesota.
  • May 2, 2025: Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence is excited to award more funds to more outstanding skilled trades teachers in 2024. Round One applications are due on Friday, May 2, 2025. See more information at the Harbor Freight Tools for Schools website.

  • May 11-13, 2025: SuperMileage Challenge – The Supermileage Competition is a yearly fuel efficiency competition held at the Brainerd International Speedway. The objective of the competition is to provide Career Technical Education students and Minnesota Technology Engineering and Education Association (MTEEA) Clubs with a challenging project that allows practical experience in design, fabrication and testing.

  • May 16, 2025: Alexandria Technical and Community College (ATCC) High School Teacher Training-ATCC is hosting their annual free training for high school teachers in June. Check out the story below for more information.

  • May 17, 2025: Solar Boat Regatta – The Minnesota Renewable Energy Society (MRES) is holding the 31 Annual Solar Boat Competition at Riley Lake in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. MRES Solar Boat Competition gives students a valuable and unique experience with photovoltaic systems, boat design and construction.

  • June 2025: Energy Education for Educators (E3) Summer Energy Workshops – E3  is a free opportunity for High School Career and Technical Education (CTE), Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources (AFNR) teachers to spark interest and to bring opportunities for energy career exploration to students.   • June and July 2025: Engineering byDesign (EbD) Workshops – EbD is offering four-day teacher trainings this summer for the EbD curriculum for elementary, middle, and high school teachers. See the training story below.

  • June 10-12, 2025: AgCentric Train the Trainer event – Workshop in welding, plumbing, electrical and construction.
  • June 23-25, 2025: Code.org Computer Science (CS) Summer Workshops – Code.Org and Code Savvy are offering the CS Discoveries and CS A workshops for middle and high school teachers. Discounts and scholarships are available. Contact Code Savvy (brad@codesavvy.org) with any questions.

  • June 23-27, 2025: Riverland Consortium Welding Training – This free training is designed for Trade and Industry or Agriculture Educators with little experience in the field of welding. If you have questions, please go to the Welding Training website or call 507-460-1706.
  • June 23-27, 2025: Siemens Engineering Design Summer Teacher Training – This exclusive training is designed specifically for 9-12 grade educators eager to master the Siemens CTE Project/Program-Based Curriculum. If you have questions, contact Jason Bruns (Jason.Bruns@mnsu.edu).

  • June 29-30, 2025: Robotics and Automation Technician Training – Secondary teacher workshop about CASE robotics and automation technician curriculum.
  • July 7-11, 2025: America’s Cutting Edge (ACE) CNC Training – St. Cloud State University (SCSU) is hosting a America’s Cutting Edge (ACE) bootcamp to teach entry-level CNC (computer numerical control) machining. For more information, check out the story below.

  • August 2025: Experience STEAM – The science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) event at the Mall of America will give attendees the opportunity to experience STEAM in action with highly-engaging hands-on activities!
  • August 5, 2025: Midwest Teachers of Transportation and Industrial Areas (MTTIA) New Teacher Mentoring – If you’ve been a transportation teacher for less than three years, please join the free New Teacher Mentoring Session this summer in conjunction with the MTTIA Conference. Register at the MTTIA website.

  • August 5-7, 2025: Midwest Teachers of Transportation and Industrial Areas (MTTIA) Summer Conference is annually held during the first week of August. Check the MTTIA website for updates.

  • August 11-12, 2025: Solar Suitcase Program –This two-day teacher training hosted at Minnesota State University in Mankato with We Share Solar will introduce 7-10 grade educators to the new Engineering Design Unit for the We Share Solar curriculum. This hands-on learning workshop is an innovative opportunity for solar STEM education with real world impact.

Inventory of Funded Programs to Support Education Workforce

An online resource, "Diversifying the Teacher Workforce: Inventory of Funded Programs," was created by Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), the Office of Higher Education (OHE) and the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) to provide a high-level overview of funded programs that could be utilized locally to support and diversify the CTE educator workforce. This resource is a living document that will be edited and revised as appropriate.

SCSU Milling Project

CNC Training at St. Cloud State

America’s Cutting Edge (ACE) program is a national initiative aimed at revitalizing United States manufacturing. St. Cloud State University (SCSU) will be offering another ACE Computer Numerical Control (CNC) training bootcamp on July 7-11, 2025.

After successful completion of the training, instructors will have access to Haas and Forest Scientific CNC mills in their own schools. The Technology, Engineering, and Careers (TEC) Network of SCSU will deliver portable CNC mills to school shops and labs for several weeks’ use by students and teachers. Materials, tools and supplies are all provided by the TEC Network as part of the ACE project (no cost to the school or teacher). To register, go to the SCSU registration webpage.

Manufacturing Training for High School Faculty

Alexandria Technical and Community College is hosting the annual manufacturing trainings for high school faculty. They are holding sessions for Machine Tool Technology on June 9-13, 2025 and Welding on June 16-18, 2025.

The trainings are free. The deadline to sign up is Friday, May 16, 2025. Space is limited, so sign up soon!

2MTEC

2MTEC Manufacturing Educator Conference

The Minnesota State Advanced Manufacturing Center of Excellence will hold a spring conference specifically designed for career and technical educators and post-secondary educators April 9-10, 2025.

2MTEC connects educators directly with manufacturers and promotes the sharing of knowledge and best practices. Attendees can hone their skills in machining, welding, mechatronics and quality in manufacturing through intensive hands-on workshops. Check out the 2MTEC conference website for more information.

Engineering byDesign Summer Workshop

Engineering byDesign (EbD) is offering specialized training this summer, providing educators with valuable professional development to enhance their curriculum and instructional strategies. This is a great chance for teachers to deepen their understanding of STEM and technology education while gaining hands-on experience with EbD resources.

Solar Suitcase Program Engineering Training

The Minnesota State Engineering Center of Excellence has partnered with WeShareSolar to develop an engineering unit for their curriculum. The Center will be offering a two-day teacher training for the WeShareSolar kits and the engineering unit at Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU) August 11-12, 2025.

2025 Southeast Minnesota Welding Competition

Registration is open for this high school welding competition at the Rochester Local 6 Plumbers and Pipefitters facility on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

They are again inviting non-competing students and staff to attend this year’s competition. They will still have the career fair, breakout sessions, hands-on activities, lunch, etc. provided for them. There is a separate registration form if you are electing to just bring non-competing students and staff. Back by popular demand, there will also have an instructor competition again this year. Instructors will be scored identically to the students.

Water Quality and Robots Program

The University of Minnesota, with support from High Tech Kids, is offering a free educational summer youth program for middle school students that combines the outdoors with robotics and science!

Leader recruitment is happening until May, training occurs at the end of May, and the program with students will happen throughout the summer.

Learn about HVAC careers

Auer Steel and Heating Supply Company is focused on working with the education community to help spread the word about the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) industry. They would love to partner with you to bring awareness of an exciting and growing career field for your students. A representative from the company will share a brief presentation and lead some hands-on exercises that paint a picture of what it is like to work as an HVAC technician.
