Teacher Residencies and Apprenticeship Planning Grants Open February 1

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) Teacher Residencies and Apprenticeships Planning Grant is making $1.2 million in funding available for up to six grants to teacher preparation providers to support planning for future teacher residency programs and registered teacher apprenticeships. Grants will support grantees and district partnerships’ participation in the National Center for Teacher Residencies (NCTR) Residency Foundations course and participation in NCTR’s Design Academy through June 2025. Additional grant funds may be used for honorariums or stipends for planning team members, travel and other expenses for team planning meetings, supplies and materials associated with planning, candidate recruitment activities and materials, and administrative costs. The application window for this grant is expected to be open from February 1 to March 11, 2024. Visit the MDE Competitive Grant Opportunities webpage for more information including instructions for applying and the grant application.

MDE will be holding a grant information session for potential grant applicants on February 5, 2024, at 1:30-2:30 p.m. This session will provide applicants with a grant overview and an overview of the application process. All registrants will receive a recording of the session. Participants can register for the grant informational session. Teacher Candidate Survey Development

The team that manages the Grow Your Own Grant (focused on increasing teachers of color and American Indian teachers) and the Special Educator Pipeline Program grant (focused on increasing special education teachers) has a strong desire to hear directly from the teacher candidates in these grant-funded programs. We are in early discussions to develop a survey of teacher candidates and focus group protocol.

We would like to partner with grantees and their teacher preparation partners on this effort. If you have an interest in contributing to a task group to review and/or develop an instrument focused on the experiences of our teacher candidates in these grant-funded programs or you have an instrument you are willing to share, please contact our team at mde.workforcecenter@state.mn.us.
