Attending the ESEA Network Conference In-Person?     

MDE Title I, Part A Specialist Cindy Ward Thompson is organizing an informal in-person meeting for Minnesota conference attendees at 11 a.m. on Thurs., Feb. 2, 2023, in Indianapolis. Email cindy.ward-thompson@state.mn.us by Mon., Jan. 30, 2023, to be included on an email with details.


SERVS Replacement Project Advisory Committee Volunteers Needed

In 2023, MDE will be developing and implementing a new grants management system to replace the current SERVS system. The new solution will support overall grant business needs while being flexible, reliable, and easy to use and support. The SERVS Replacement Project seeks grantee representatives to participate on the project’s Advisory Committee. Grantee representatives are those who participate in grant management at the district or grantee organization level and have the desire to provide input on the new system. The Advisory Committee will have representation for each grant type and will be comprised of no more than 10 members from varying roles and district types and sizes.  

The SERVS Replacement Project is being managed by the MDE SERVS Steering Committee. The Advisory Committee will augment the knowledge and skills of this Steering Committee, and provide input, information and recommendations from a user perspective to assist in this important initiative. 

Scope of participation:

  1. Time frame:  Late January 2023 through fall 2023
  2. Participate in one-hour weekly project meetings via Microsoft TEAMS to monitor progress and provide feedback directly to the project team
  3. Participants will provide feedback in the areas of their expertise, reviewing planned changes and recommending best practices for solutions
  4. Represent the needs of their organization as they provide guidance and expertise to MDE project team
  5. Outside of project meetings, participate in User Acceptance Testing (UAT) estimated to happen between the end of February and the end of March

Paraprofessional Recognition Week is this week, January 23-29! The Memo from Commissioner Jett, Paraprofessional Recognition Week Certificate of Commendation, and the Paraprofessional Recognition Week 2023 - Governor's Proclamation are posted on the Paraprofessionals webpage. 


Educator Toolkit for Family Engagement from the Minnesota Statewide Family Engagement Center (MNSFEC)

MNSFEC has just launched an Educator Toolkit for Family Engagement. This online toolkit:

  • Will interest anyone who engages in educating children or promoting family engagement.
  • Was designed in collaboration with a diverse group of Minnesota educators.
  • Provides educators with curated, research-driven, and up-to-date resources on best practices in family engagement.
  • Contains resources grouped by topic.
  • Contains resources grouped by staff levels.

Anyone who works in a school building, a district office, a community organization, or serves on a committee that supports the education of children, will find resources in this toolkit to support and inspire transformative family engagement.


ICYMI: Final Deadline Approaching – Minnesota COVID-19 School Testing Grants

The Minnesota COVID-19 School Testing Grant, FIN 170, is currently active and all school districts and charter schools that have applied and accepted funding are encouraged to begin drawing down funds from SERVS at this time and regularly throughout the year.

The final draw deadline for FIN 170 is July 22, 2023. All budget items that need MDE approval must be submitted by July 15, 2023. It is important that all funds are drawn by July 22, 2023, given the federal CDC grant deadline. If your district or charter school does not intend to spend the entirety of your FIN 170 award, please notify mde.testing@state.mn.us right away.

Upcoming Training Opportunities 

Join the MDE Student Access and Opportunity staff for upcoming trainings. All links to join can be found on the MDE Calendar. There is no need to register unless otherwise noted. 

Language Access Network

The Language Access Network (LAN) is a statewide community of practice that ensures families who speak languages other than English have access to information and services from public schools. LAN consists of school and school district personnel responsible for Minnesota's multilingual children and families' interpretation, translation and language access needs.

English Learner Coordinator Webinar

The English Learner (EL) Coordinator webinars are monthly web events for new and experienced EL program leaders and coordinators in Minnesota. Monthly topics vary and are based on timely information from the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE). Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions to EL Education Specialists and others from MDE during each webinar.

McKinney-Vento Subgrantee Evaluation Workshop

All McKinney-Vento subgrantees are expected not only to collect data on students experiencing homelessness, but to utilize the data for program improvement. Evaluation is a valuable and necessary addition to the provision of services. Built into regular programming, well-conducted evaluations assist providers in knowing if their services have a real impact on families’ lives. This workshop will provide an overview of the Evaluation Capacity-Building Workshop Series that will launch in spring 2023. Participants will talk through background, scope, launch, and how to engage with the series.

New to ESEA Title Programs Networking Session – February

Join the Student Access and Opportunity team for a monthly two-hour session in support of school district and charter school leaders who are new to managing ESEA Title Programs. These sessions on the second Monday of each month will cover all-things related to the implementation of activities funded by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Each session will include new learning and ample time for questions, answers and networking.
