School Nutrition Programs (SNP)

Low-Fat Flavored Milk Flexibility

On March 15, 2022, the federal funding bill was passed and it did not extend automatic allowance of low-fat (1%) flavored milk in the National School Lunch (NSLP) or School Breakfast Program (SBP) for the remainder of 2021-22 school year. Starting July 1, 2022, the final rule Child Nutrition Programs: Transitional Standards for Milk, Whole Grains, and Sodium will allow low-fat flavored milk to be served in the NSLP, SBP, the Special Milk Program, and Child and Adult Care Food Program. However, if schools want to continue serving low-fat (1%) flavored milk in NSLP or SBP until July 1, they will need approval from the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE).  Submit a school meal pattern waiver request.
