Safe Learning Plan Updates

Yesterday, Governor Walz announced updates to Minnesota's Safe Learning Plan as we work to bring more Minnesota students back into classrooms. To complement the updates to the Safe Learning Plan, the Minnesota Department of Health also updated the 2020-21 Planning Guide for Schools.

Minnesota's COVID-19 Vaccine Connector

Today, the State of Minnesota announced the launch of the Minnesota COVID-19 Vaccine Connector, which is a tool that helps Minnesotans find out when, where and how to get their COVID-19 vaccine.

We need the help of our school leaders to spread the message to staff and families in your communities.

Note: School staff continue to be prioritized for COVID-19 vaccines. Those who already completed the Minnesota COVID-19 Vaccine Education and Child Care Survey do not need to complete the Vaccine Connector Form.

2020-21 Enrollment Data

The Minnesota Department of Education will release 2020-21 enrollment data tomorrow, Friday, February 19, 2021, at 10 a.m. This data will be reflective of October 1 enrollment numbers. You will be able to find the data in the "Student" section of MDE's Data Center. We're alerting you of this release ahead of time for your planning purposes.

Minnesota Social Studies Standards

We've heard from many school leaders looking for advice on how to respond questions and concerns regarding the current revision process for the Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards in Social Studies. Below, you will find some sample language that may be helpful in responding to parents or community members.

Sample language:

Thank you for your interest in Minnesota’s Academic Standards in Social Studies. Our students’ education is at its strongest when Minnesotans are engaged in the planning process. That is why each time Minnesota’s academic standards are up for review, a committee is formed of Minnesotans with varying perspectives and backgrounds from all across our state, their meetings are made public, and multiple early drafts of the standards are made available for public input.

The first early draft was released by the committee on December 1, 2020. This draft was not intended as a complete draft of a final product. The draft was a reflection of where the standards review committee was at in the review and revision process as of December 1. The public comment received on this draft will inform the development of the next draft. The benchmarks listed in that first draft are simply examples of what could be included under each standard.

Historical U.S. events like WWII and the Holocaust are being taught in Minnesota schools and they will continue to be taught. The next draft of the social studies standards will be released this spring and we will keep our school community informed of opportunities to provide public comment.

Training Opportunities, Important Dates and Announcements

PSEO by Contract Reported in MCCC

PSEO by Contract reporting is required for all districts receiving the ADM for a student. If a district is paying Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) tuition to another school or postsecondary institution, then the postsecondary course is to be reported in MCCC by that district. To find out how to report these instances in your school district, please contact your student information system (SIS) support.

Note: This data is for postsecondary course information coded with a state course content code as part of a student record; there is no district course or staff information collected. Contact your SIS support for help coding this information. Specifically, this information should be entered in your SIS as a student enrollment/coursework type of DirectPayPSEO.

Because there is money being exchanged, it is important to understand that MDE's Division of School Finance does not have a log of this exchange unless it is reported to MCCC. MCCC data submission is the only state reporting option for these enrollments. Once reported to the state via MCCC, state legislative reports include this information for counting PSEO participation.

MDE is looking into creating a district-level report that would include a list of the students reported in MCCC as PSEO by contract enrollment.

MCCC Submission Dates Reminder

2019-20 school year data submission will have another collection date from April 5, 2021, through June 30, 2021.

2020-21 school year data submission will open April 5, 2021, with the collection closing December 10, 2021. Please note that Early Education is due by July 8, 2021.

You will find all MCCC submission dates and submissions requirements on the MCCC Document webpage.

If you have questions regarding MCCC, contact Karen Millette (651-582-8632).

MCIS Training Opportunity

The Minnesota Career Information System (MCIS) is a comprehensive, online career exploration program. We provide information on occupations, apprenticeships/short term training, colleges and universities and scholarship information.

  • With an MCIS license, schools have the option to add-on online test prep packages for ACT, SAT, Civil Service and college placement. These packages are offered for an annual fee and include unlimited use for students. We have decided to hold our fees for the 2021-22 school year. The fee schedule can be accessed from our website.
  • In addition to scheduled trainings(s), we are available to work with individual districts/schools to assist in developing a career exploration curriculum using MCIS. The embedded curriculum also supports self-exploration and Social Emotional Learning. You can see upcoming trainings from our Training tab.
  • The SLEDS-MCIS project compares student work in MCIS with SLEDS data. Having insights into these longitudinal data can assist schools in their career and college outcome planning. Please contact us for more information.
