Comments Requested on K-12 Academic Standards in English Language Arts
The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) requests comments on its possible amendment to rules governing the K-12 academic standards in English language arts.
MDE is considering rule amendments that change the existing K-12 academic standards in English language arts to reflect current research. The committee has proposed rule language that fits the needs of Minnesota’s students and supports the goals of Minnesota’s English language arts community and promotes literacy for all students.
The department is considering rule amendments that change the existing K-12 academic standards in English language arts to reflect national research. The standards review committee has proposed rule language that fits the needs of Minnesota’s students and supports the goals of career and college readiness in English language arts. The proposed rule language is posted on MDE K-12 Academic Standards in English Language Arts rulemaking webpage.
The Request for Comments will be published in the Minnesota State Register on February 16, 2021. Interested persons or groups may submit written comments or information on these possible rules in writing until 4:30 p.m. on April 16, 2021.

Commenters are encouraged to use the e-comments option through the Office of Administrative Hearings.
The department has formed an English Language Arts Standards Review Committee selected from a group of qualified applicants. This Committee assists in drafting the possible K-12 academic standards in English language arts. More information about the work of the committee and the guiding assumptions the committee used in drafting the possible rules are available on MDE’s academic standards webpage.
