U.S. Department of Education Recognizes Ten Minnesota Schools as 2019 National Blue Ribbon Schools

ROSEVILLE, MN - The U.S. Department of Education today recognized ten Minnesota schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2019, based on their overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student groups.

“I’m proud to celebrate these ten Blue Ribbon schools that are going above and beyond to give Minnesota students a world-class education,” said Governor Walz. “We will continue learning from one another to make progress and provide every single child in Minnesota with that same extraordinary education, regardless of race or ZIP code.”

“Given the imperative to close our achievement gap, it’s great to see our schools and educators being recognized for their hard work,” said Minnesota Education Commissioner Mary Cathryn Ricker. “I am incredibly proud of our educators for the high-quality teaching and learning environments that they create for our students. I offer my congratulations to this year’s awardees and look forward to partnering with them to see what best practices we can amplify throughout the state so all of our students can have the best education possible.”

The coveted National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content. Schools are honored in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, student group scores and graduation rates:

  • Exemplary High Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools, as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
  • Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s student groups and all students.

The recognized schools from Minnesota are:

  • Aspen Academy, Aspen Academy Charter School
  • Hancock Secondary, Hancock Public School District
  • Hills-Beaver Creek Elementary School, Hills-Beaver Creek School District
  • Lincoln Elementary School, White Bear Lake Area School
  • Lincoln Elementary School, Alexandria Public School District
  • Montevideo Middle School, Montevideo Public School District
  • Our Lady of Grace Catholic School in Edina, MN
  • TCU Lonsdale Elementary School, Tri-City United School District
  • Trinity School at River Ridge in Eagan, MN
  • Wayzata West Middle School, Wayzata Public Schools

Now in its 37th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed recognition on more than 9,000 schools. On November 14 and 15, the U.S. Secretary and Department of Education will celebrate with 312 public and 50 nonpublic school honorees at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.
