February 11, 2019 - Continuing his goal of ending childhood obesity, fitness icon Jake Steinfeld, Chairman of the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils (NFGFC), has kicked off 2019 by selecting the State of Minnestoa for its 2019 DON’T QUIT! Campaign.

PBIS Recognition System: Deadline March 29, 2019

Minnesota schools and districts are invited to apply for the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Recognition System. The purpose of Minnesota PBIS Recognition is to identify and recognize exemplar schools and districts that have completed PBIS implementation and are continuing to achieve positive student outcomes. These schools and districts are able to demonstrate exemplary status by sustaining school-wide PBIS with fidelity in the current 2018-19 school year. Criteria are based on effective implementation of the essential components outlined by our national Technical Assistance Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support. More information is available on the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports webpage. Applications for PBIS Recognition are due March 29, 2019. Commissioner's Dialogue with Superintendents – February 20, 2019

Superintendents and charter school directors are invited to participate in this monthly audio conference call hosted by Commissioner Mary Cathryn Ricker. The next call is scheduled for Wednesday, February 20, 9:30-10:30 a.m. A notice providing dial-in instructions will be sent prior to the call. Comments to offer and/or questions you would like to ask are encouraged.

Once you receive the agenda next week, please invite any staff you feel appropriate to participate on the call.

Conference Call Schedule: March 20, April 17, May 15. All calls are 9:30-10:30 a.m.

FY 2019 Advanced Placement Program Application – Due April 19

The Minnesota Legislature has appropriated $4.5 million dollars to provide financial incentives to schools for student exam subsidies and teacher training for the Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate programs. Read the February 2019 memorandum from Mary Barrie, Ed.D.

Advanced Placement Student Exam Reimbursement Policies and Procedures 2019
Exam subsidies are available for public and non-public school students. The state will reimburse $53 per exam for category one (fee-reduced, low-income) students and $40 per exam for exams taken by category two (non-fee-reduced) students. To qualify for exam fee reimbursement for your students, each school must complete and submit the Advanced Placement Program Application for Reimbursement form to the department by April 19, 2019.

Advanced Placement Teacher Training Scholarship Process 2019
Minnesota scholarships are available for public and non-public teachers who are teaching or plan to teach an AP course in 2019-20. The school or district will be responsible for the initial cost of the training. Approved scholarships are paid directly to the school or district.

Registration is open for the eleventh annual symposium in Austin, Minnesota. Sessions will address best practices on the assessment of students for services, program models, social and emotional needs, instructional strategies, twice exceptional learners, under-represented populations, under-achievement, project based learning, and specific content in the areas.
