90-Second Newbery Film Festival

Kid Filmmakers Creatively Retell Great Books in 90 Seconds or Less

Be part of the fifth annual Minnesota screening of the top films submitted by kid moviemakers to the 90-Second Newbery Film Festival. This national contest celebrates the biggest award in children’s literature by challenging students across the country to make a film that retells the story of a Newbery Award-winning book in no more than 90 seconds.

Screening co-hosts and authors James Kennedy and Jacqueline West will keep the crowd entertained with comedic patter and their favorite 90-second films from Minnesota and across the country.

Join us on Saturday, February 23, 2019, from 3-4:30 p.m. at the Hennepin County Library-Minneapolis Central, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis, MN 55401, in Pohlad Hall. Admission is free. Although you do not have to register to attend, please let us know you are coming. RSVP for the 90-Second Newbery Film Festival 2019 - Minneapolis Screening.

On-site book sales will be provided by Red Balloon Bookshop.

Minnesota’s screening is made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Minnesota Department of Education’s State Library Services division.

WEBINARS

Registration Is Open for the Webinar 3 of the Addressing Discipline Disproportionalities Webinar Series

Our webinar series focused on addressing disproportionalities in discipline will continue next week with webinar 3. The series is focused on managing effective data conversations, assessing inclusion models, working toward cultural and linguistic competence, addressing implicit bias, and conducting root cause analyses. Hosted in collaboration with the Illinois State Board of Education and the Midwest Comprehensive Center, the next webinar in the series will take place on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at 3 p.m.

Learn how the Addressing the Root Causes of Disparities in School Discipline Guidebook—produced by the National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments—can assist with improvement efforts. The guidebook includes tools to help you assess and systematically address disparities in school discipline. The webinar series will provide an overview of the guidebook and opportunities for you to look at your data and apply the guidebook’s tools. The webinar series covers the following topics:

Webinar 1 took place on January 16 at 3-4:30 p.m.

  • Webinar 2 took place on January 30 at 3-4:30 p.m. and was repeated on February 6 at 3-4:30 p.m.
  • Webinar 3 will focus on planning discipline improvements based on the analyses of data and root causes. It will include sharing findings, developing and implementing an action plan, and honing in on common issues often revealed by the data analyses like building inclusive models of behavior and addressing trauma. Webinar 3 will take place on February 13 at 3-4:30 p.m.
  • Webinar 4 will discuss measuring the action plan, including monitoring as the plan progresses. Webinar 4 will take place on February 27 at 3-4:30 p.m.

Recommended participants include district and school administrators, leadership teams, counselors, deans, and any educators interested in supporting this conversation in their schools. Attendees are welcome to join individually or with team members.

Webinar Series: Strengthening Tier 1 Multi-Tiered System of Supports

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) Special Education Division is sponsoring a webinar series this spring to provide information on practical strategies to support students’ social, emotional and behavioral skill development within a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) framework.

This series will highlight best practices based on current research from the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) Technical Assistance Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and voices from the field to illustrate applied examples from Minnesota schools. Minnesota educators and MTSS teams who support social-emotional and behavioral skill development of students or who are responsible for building systems to support these practices within an educational setting are encouraged to participate.

Erin Farrell, MDE Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) specialist, is a board certified behavior analyst. Janet Christensen, MDE Emotional and Behavioral Disorder (EBD) specialist, is a former special education teacher and school administrator. Both Erin and Janet have practical experience and behavioral expertise in a variety of K-12 schools including inclusive general education settings, the most restrictive in general and special education and charter schools.

Access the webinar series from the links below. All sessions will start at 3 p.m. and last one hour. Call in to the webinar series audio at 1-206-596-0378 (toll line). For more information, contact Erin Farrell or Janet Christensen.
