MCCC: ALC Independent Study Course Classifications

Announcement: Alternative Learning Center Independent Study “Course” Classifications

The Minnesota Common Course Catalogue (MCCC) team knows many schools are busy working on local course indexes which is the first submission for the MCCC data collection, and we are developing the final three submissions which will complete the MCCC data collection: 2) Calendar Information, 3) Staff Course Records, and 4) Student Course Records.

As a result of our development with these subsequent submissions, we have discovered that ALC Independent Study “courses” must be classified differently than regularly scheduled classroom courses to report credits and grades on the Student Course Record.   For this reason, we are asking that all ALC Independent Study “courses” be classified using the Independent Study classifications in the various MCCC Subject Areas. Please include these separate classifications for independent study coursework in your local course index. PLEASE NOTE: These instructions pertain ONLY to ALC Independent Study coursework.

Each MCCC Subject Area has an Independent Study classification. They are always in the Other Category at the end of a Subject Area. For example:

01997 English Language and Literature—Independent Study

            02997 Mathematics—Independent Study

03997 Life and Physical Sciences—Independent Study

04997 Social Sciences and History—Independent Study

This means all the language arts “courses” your ALC offers through independent study should be classified under 01997, all math “courses” your ALC offers through independent study should be classified under 02997 and so on. All courses classified under Independent Study classifications may be sequenced as 1/1 or stand alone courses. We know that your system may offer many courses which will be indexed under each of these classifications, but your local course number will always be used to identify the different courses under each of these classifications.

PLEASE NOTE: The only MCCC Subject Areas that do NOT have Independent Study classifications are 05: Visual and Performing Arts and 08: Physical, Health and Safety Education. For your 2010-2011 index, please use the classification 23977 Nonspecific Subject Areas—Independent Study for any courses your system offers in these two subject areas. We will add independent study classifications in each of the arts areas, physical education and health to the 2012 MCCC.

We apologize for any inconvenience this late notice in terms of classification instructions causes. As always if you have questions, concerns or simply want to know why these independent study courses must be managed differently, please feel free to contact us at mde.mccc@state.mn.us.  We will be happy to share more information with you.
